No. Sam Smith and Adele are separate recording artists, with different full names and birth dates. The rumor that Smith might be “Adele in drag” was discussed as a joke—not as a genuine identity claim.
How do we know Sam Smith and Adele are different people?
The Recording Academy lists Sam Smith’s birth name as Samuel Frederick Smith and their birth date as May 19, 1992. Sony Music identifies Adele as Adele Laurie Blue Adkins, born May 5, 1988. Their separate artist biographies also document them as distinct recording artists: Universal Music Japan’s Sam Smith biography and Sony Music Japan’s Adele profile.
Where did the rumor come from?
In a January 23, 2023 report, The Independent said Smith addressed the rumor on The Drew Barrymore Show. Smith joked that people thought they were Adele in drag because the two had never been seen in the same room, and that slowing Adele’s voice might make it sound like theirs. As Smith put it, “If you slow down her voice, it sounds a bit like mine, so people think that we’re the same person.”
The “never seen in the same room” line is part of the joke’s framing, not evidence that the artists share an identity. Smith’s remark explains the rumor’s premise; it does not confirm it.
