Ella Purnell’s question to Arcane showrunner Christian Linke was prompted by Isha’s sacrifice at the end of season two’s second act. As Gizmodo reported, Purnell asked, “What’s wrong with you? Why did you write that?” Linke’s answer tied the moment to Jinx’s fear that the destruction around her is something she can never escape.
What prompted Purnell’s question?
In a November 20, 2024 report, Gizmodo’s Isaiah Colbert described the exchange in the second episode of Afterglow, Arcane’s behind-the-scenes YouTube series. Purnell, who voices Jinx, was reacting to Isha’s sacrifice in the season-two act-two finale when she asked Linke, “What’s wrong with you? Why did you write that?”
The question was an informal response to a painful plot turn, not a dispute about the scene’s meaning. Linke answered by explaining what Isha’s death represents for Jinx.
How Linke connected Isha’s sacrifice to Jinx
According to Gizmodo, Linke called the moment “a terrible reminder for Jinx” that Isha is inspired by the havoc and destruction around her. He continued: “It’s another reminder, ‘You’ll never be able to escape this.’ It’s just so tough, especially when it happens to someone as innocent as Isha.”

His explanation frames the loss as more than grief: it confronts Jinx with the fear that the chaos associated with her will keep reaching people she cares about. Isha’s innocence makes that reminder especially cruel. The quotes here are attributed to Gizmodo’s account; the Afterglow video was not independently reviewed, so they should not be treated as transcript-verified wording.
Why Isha mattered to Purnell’s reading of Jinx
Purnell described Isha as a reflection of Jinx, and of the person Powder wished she could have been. As Gizmodo quoted her, Isha is “everything Powder wishes Powder was at the time.” Their playful bond allows a joyful, childlike side of Jinx to surface, making Isha’s belief in her feel consequential: it offers a possibility that Jinx might change.

Purnell also described Jinx as caught in a “self-fulfilling prophecy”: “She’s a jinx. It’s almost a self-fulfilling prophecy.” That is Purnell’s interpretation of the character, rather than a separate statement of Linke’s intent. Set alongside Linke’s explanation, it clarifies why Isha’s sacrifice hurts on two levels: Jinx loses someone innocent, and the loss appears to confirm her fear that she brings destruction wherever she goes.

The discussion offers two complementary perspectives: Linke’s account of the event’s effect on Jinx, and Purnell’s view of Isha as a mirror for the younger Powder. It does not make the sacrifice a simple lesson or erase the emotional force of the scene. Instead, the reported exchange points to the tension at its center: Isha’s faith makes change seem possible, while the loss threatens to convince Jinx that change is beyond her reach.
