What Amazon MGM’s Bond deal changed
Before the deal, Amazon already held distribution rights to all James Bond films following its acquisition of MGM. The new arrangement added a different authority: creative control over future Bond productions. Distribution concerns how films reach audiences; creative control concerns who leads decisions about making new productions.

Amazon MGM Studios, Wilson, and Broccoli formed a joint venture to house the Bond intellectual property rights. Amazon’s announcement says the parties remain co-owners, while Amazon MGM has creative control. That means the change is not a sale that made Amazon the franchise’s sole owner. Amazon’s joint-venture announcement was published February 20, 2025, and updated March 25, 2025, to record the closing.
Why Wilson and Broccoli stepped back
Wilson said he was stepping back from producing the films after a career with 007 spanning nearly 60 years, and planned to focus on art and charitable projects. Broccoli said she would turn her attention to other projects after the conclusion of No Time to Die and Wilson’s retirement from the films. Their comments accompanied the transition to Amazon MGM’s creative leadership.

Who is making the next James Bond film?
Amazon’s latest official update, published May 14, 2026, identifies the announced creative team for the next film. Amazon’s update said casting had begun, but it did not identify the next actor to play 007.

Amazon’s announcements name Villeneuve as director and Lapointe as executive producer in its June 25, 2025 announcement, and Knight as screenwriter in its July 31, 2025 announcement. The May 2026 update said the studio did not plan to comment on specific details while casting was underway, so neither an actor nor a release timetable should be treated as confirmed by those announcements.
