Stories and episodes are no longer for sale on Amazon.com, but Amazon says people who previously read or purchased episodes can continue reading them in the free Kindle apps for Fire tablets, iOS, and Android. Authors can still view payment information in their Payments statement, although the Vella dashboard is gone.
When did Kindle Vella shut down?
Amazon’s Kindle Vella service wound down effective February 26, 2025. Amazon says Vella “didn’t catch on as we’d hoped.” Since closure, stories and episodes have not been available for purchase on Amazon.com. Amazon’s Kindle Vella Update FAQ is the primary source for the closure and what remains accessible.
Can readers still access stories they already read or bought?
Yes. Amazon says readers who previously read or purchased episodes can continue reading them in the free Kindle apps for Fire tablets, iOS, and Android. The closure FAQ does not list Kindle for Web as a continuing access route, so it should not be assumed to remain available.
What happened to Vella Tokens?
Vella used Tokens to unlock episodes beyond the free opening episodes at launch. That purchase system is no longer active because stories and episodes are no longer for sale. Amazon’s closure FAQ does not specify a token refund or a refund process; it is not a basis for assuming that a refund is available or that Tokens can still be used.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What should former Vella authors do?
Amazon encourages authors to republish Vella stories as eBooks so readers can continue to discover and enjoy them. The closure FAQ links to Kindle Create and manuscript-preparation guidance, including resources for preparing eBook and print editions through KDP. Republishing is a new publishing step, not a continuation of Vella sales. Formatting, rights, exclusivity, pricing, and distribution choices depend on the manuscript and current KDP rules.
Can authors still see their Vella reports and payments?
The Kindle Vella dashboard in KDP Reports is no longer available. Amazon says authors can still see payment information in their Payments statement; it does not say that the former dashboard’s other reporting features or data remain accessible.

What Vella was—and why old launch details can mislead
Amazon announced Vella’s U.S. launch on July 13, 2021, describing a mobile-first interactive format for serialized stories, initially available through the Kindle iOS app and Amazon.com. The launch announcement said episodes ran from 600 to 5,000 words and the first three episodes of each story were free, with later episodes unlocked using Tokens. These are historical launch-era terms, not current purchase options. Amazon’s 2021 launch announcement records those original mechanics.
Free-episode offers later changed for specific promotions. For example, an About Amazon notice dated March 14, 2024 described a time-limited Prime Student promotion offering the first 10 episodes of each story free through August 29, 2024. That promotion has ended and does not change Vella’s closure or establish current access terms. About Amazon’s promotion notice gives its historical details.
