Actors have turned down major roles for reasons ranging from script doubts and fear of typecasting to negotiations and career tradeoffs. Some later regretted the choice; others stood by it. The stories below distinguish confirmed refusals from casting approaches and roles actors only said they wished they had taken.
Why actors pass on major roles
A role can be described as “turned down” even when the details differ: an actor may have declined a confirmed offer, been approached about a part, left negotiations without an agreement, or later named a film as one they should have done. Those distinctions matter, especially when reporting does not identify the character or establish that an offer was finalized.
- Creative concerns: doubts about a script, director, or the material itself.
- Typecasting or commitment: worry that a role or franchise could narrow future choices.
- Negotiations: discussions that failed to produce an agreement.
- Career tradeoffs: choosing another project or preserving room for varied work.
Script and creative concerns
Hugh Jackman: James Bond
Jackman said his agent raised the possibility of Bond while he was preparing for X-Men 2. He was concerned about being committed to Bond as well as the X-Men franchise, and said he had reservations about the scripts: “I just felt at the time that the scripts had become so unbelievable and crazy.” His comments, reported by ABC News from a Variety interview, describe why he passed; they do not identify a particular Bond film as a finalized offer. Denzel Washington: Se7en and Michael Clayton
In 2012, Washington named Se7en and Michael Clayton when asked about roles he should have taken. He said he had been nervous about working with a first-time director on Michael Clayton. Nicolas Cage: films from Christopher Nolan and others
Cage told Variety that he had declined films offered by Christopher Nolan, Woody Allen and Paul Thomas Anderson, naming Nolan’s Insomnia as one example. He also said David O. Russell offered him another film after Cage had turned down an earlier one. Cage observed that directors may take a refusal personally: “Most of them, they get their feelings hurt and don’t call you back.” That is his general account, not evidence that every declined role ended a professional relationship. Josh Hartnett: Batman, Superman and Spider-Man

Madonna: The Matrix and Catwoman
Madonna said she turned down The Matrix and Catwoman in Batman Returns. She expressed regret about Catwoman, but not about passing on Showgirls. The Independent noted that Madonna did not specify which character in The Matrix she was offered, so identifying it as Trinity goes beyond what her account establishes. The Independent
Negotiations and role changes
Robert De Niro: adult Josh Baskin in Big
De Niro confirmed that he was initially cast as the adult Josh Baskin in Big, but said negotiations became an issue. Matthew Modine said the role was then offered to him after De Niro and Harrison Ford; Tom Hanks ultimately played it. The cited account does not specify what the negotiation issue was, so it cannot be reduced to a particular fee or contract demand. The Independent

Albert Brooks: roles that went to other actors
Brooks told The Atlantic that he was offered parts that later went to Tom Hanks in Big, Billy Crystal in When Harry Met Sally and Robin Williams in Dead Poets Society. His concern about When Harry Met Sally was the identity it might impose: “If I do this, I’m Woody Allen forever.” In this case, the account is about roles offered and declined, not simply a later expression of regret. Regret does not tell the whole story
Looking back, actors describe different outcomes: regret, acceptance, or a decision they cannot fully evaluate. Washington named films he wished he had taken, Madonna regretted missing Catwoman, and DiCaprio expressed affection for Boogie Nights while acknowledging what Titanic meant for his career. Hanks offered the counterpoint: a famous film’s success does not mean the actor who passed would have made the same film. The useful question is not only which part was declined, but what the actor said about the choice—and how certain the record is about the offer itself.
