Some wedding guests apparently read it as a ban on underwear. The Australian reality-TV personality recounted the mix-up on her podcast, Life Uncut, in 2024; Hockley and her co-host laughed when they realized what the guests had understood.
What did Brittany Hockley mean by “no thongs”?
Hockley was referring to thong sandals, a common Australian term for open-toed footwear. Some guests understood “thongs” to mean underwear, so the wording sounded like a dress-code rule banning g-strings.
PerthNow reported that Hockley told co-host Laura Byrne, “Our dress code is pretty standard,” before describing guests’ questions about how strictly the rule would be enforced. The outlet transcribed Hockley recounting her fiancé Ben Siegrist’s reaction: “Ben calls me ‘babe half of the wedding thinks you’ve said no g-strings strict enforcement’”. That is reported dialogue from her podcast anecdote, not an independently authenticated transcript. PerthNow’s October 9, 2024 report covers the story.
“Half of the wedding,” as quoted in the anecdote, is a casual expression—not a measured count of guests. The reports describe the people involved, not a universal rule about how everyone outside Australia uses the word.

Where did the story come from?
Hockley shared the anecdote with Byrne on Life Uncut. According to PerthNow, the questions came after the couple sent save-the-dates. A guest asked how strictly the dress-code instruction would be enforced and how Hockley could know what she wore. When the guests’ interpretation became clear, Hockley and Byrne laughed.
Pedestrian.TV’s October 10, 2024 coverage recounted the same podcast exchange, including Hockley’s report that Siegrist told her half the wedding thought she had banned g-strings. Both stories present it as a humorous misunderstanding about the word “thongs.”

What happened to Hockley and Siegrist?
“Bride-to-be” describes Hockley at the time of the 2024 anecdote. Marie Claire Australia reported that she and Siegrist later married at Pandawa Cliff Estate in Bali. Its June 10, 2025 wedding feature describes three custom dresses by Steven Khalil and guests who had traveled from different parts of the couple’s lives. Read Marie Claire Australia’s wedding coverage.
New Idea later reported that the couple planned to complete their legal marriage in Australia because of practicalities around marrying in Bali. That detail is New Idea’s account, rather than independent confirmation of their legal status. New Idea’s February 13, 2026 report describes the plan.

How to avoid the same dress-code confusion
For a guest list with different language backgrounds, spell out the item rather than relying on a word that may have more than one meaning. “Please wear no thong sandals” is clearer than “no thongs”; if footwear is unrestricted, say so directly. The joke landed because the wording was easy to read in two very different ways.
