During a live Sunrise interview in January 2024, WWE performer Grayson Waller threatened to punch a floor manager after the hosts joked about demonstrating a wrestling move. Former Weekend Sunrise host Matt Doran stepped in and moved the manager away. The reports describe a verbal threat, not a punch or a confirmed intention to assault anyone.
What happened on Sunrise?
Waller and fellow WWE performer LA Knight appeared on the Australian breakfast program on January 17, 2024, while promoting WWE’s Elimination Chamber event in Perth. According to PerthNow’s January 18 account, host Natalie Barr asked the wrestlers to demonstrate a signature finishing move. Knight declined, saying that using one would not make it a good day for anyone.
The hosts then brought a floor manager into the exchange, joking that he was leaving that week. The manager shadow-boxed toward the wrestlers. Waller objected to the joke and threatened him: “If I come over there we are going to have the police here because I’m not going to give you some fake punch. I am going to punch you straight in the jaw.” He stood to face the manager, and Doran intervened, moving the manager away and apologizing.
Waller continued to complain about what he saw as disrespect, while telling Barr, “We love you, everyone else though…” PerthNow also reported that John Cena’s theme music was used in the segment. These details are attributed to the contemporaneous report; no punch is reported.

Why did Grayson Waller threaten Matt Doran?
The threat was directed at the floor manager, not Doran. It followed the hosts’ joke and the manager’s shadow-boxing. Waller appeared to take the exchange as disrespectful, according to PerthNow’s description, but the available accounts do not establish his private intent.
Doran’s role was to step between Waller and the manager, move the manager away and apologize. Calling the incident a threat on air is supported by the reported words and actions; saying Waller assaulted someone or intended to carry out the threat would go beyond what the accounts establish.

Was the Grayson Waller Sunrise incident real?
The broadcast exchange was reported as an on-air confrontation, and the quoted threat was attributed to Waller by PerthNow. That establishes what he was reported to have said and how Doran responded. It does not establish whether Waller meant to act on the threat.
In a follow-up published January 19, Fox Sports reported Waller’s response, quoting him in an interview with news.com.au: “I had a feeling that most of my airtime was probably going to be me yelling and screaming, and I’m OK with that.” Fox Sports characterized his response as unapologetic. That later comment is context about his public reaction, not proof of what he privately intended during the interview.

Why were Waller and LA Knight on the show?
The wrestlers were promoting Elimination Chamber: Perth, scheduled for February 24, 2024, at Optus Stadium in Perth, Western Australia. WWE described the event as a Premium Live Event and said it marked the company’s return to Australia for a major event. WWE’s event announcement gives the date and venue.
WWE’s official Grayson Waller profile identifies him as being from Sydney and lists Rolling Thunder Stunner as his signature move. That profile supplies wrestling context, but PerthNow’s report does not identify the move the hosts asked the wrestlers to demonstrate.

Doran later left his Weekend Sunrise role. In November 2024, 7NEWS reported that he would finish at the end of that year, with December 8 as his final show. He should therefore be described in current coverage as a former Weekend Sunrise host. 7NEWS reported the departure.
