That account does not establish that the IUD caused an injury, what the injury was, or whether either person had lasting harm.
What the account says happened
The available secondary article summarizes earlier PerthNow coverage. In the version attributed to Davies, she experienced pain during intercourse, noticed an injury to her partner afterward, and received hospital care that included IUD removal.
This is a reported account, not a medical record or a clinician’s description. The original PerthNow coverage was not independently reviewed here, and the available account does not include hospital documentation, examination findings, a statement from the partner, or a diagnosis.
What remains unknown
The reporting does not establish the IUD’s type or position before it was removed, the precise mechanism of the reported injury, or a diagnosis for either person. It also does not establish lasting anatomical damage. The injury should not be described as a penile fracture, amputation, or permanent loss of tissue without evidence supporting that diagnosis.

The fact that the IUD was reportedly removed during hospital care does not, by itself, establish that it caused the partner’s injury or Davies’s pain. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) makes the same distinction about adverse-event reports generally: “A reported reaction does not necessarily mean it has been caused by IUD, only that the reporter had a suspicion it may have.”
Where an IUD sits—and what a partner might feel
An IUD is placed in the uterus. Thin threads extend through the cervix into the upper vagina so a clinician can check or remove the device. A partner may rarely feel those threads during sex; the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says, “In rare cases, your partner may feel the IUD strings during sex.” That general possibility does not show that strings were involved in Davies’s reported incident.

NHS guidance says a partner should not normally feel the threads. If a partner can feel them and it is bothersome, a doctor or nurse can check them; ACOG says an ob-gyn may be able to trim the threads if they are a concern. Do not try to adjust or remove an IUD yourself.
Symptoms that warrant medical advice
These are general warning signs, not a way to diagnose the reported incident. NHS guidance advises seeking clinical help if IUD threads cannot be felt or feel different, or if there is worsening lower abdominal pain, fever, unusual discharge, very heavy bleeding, or possible pregnancy. Follow current local medical advice; urgent symptoms should be assessed by a clinician rather than interpreted from a news story.

What general complication figures can—and cannot—tell us
In a 2015 safety update, the MHRA stated that uterine perforation with intrauterine contraception occurs in fewer than 1 in 1,000 women. It identified insertion during lactation and insertion within 36 weeks after giving birth as important risk factors, and listed pain during sex among possible symptoms. These are general safety facts; they do not show that perforation occurred in this case.
The same MHRA update reported 114 reports of uterine perforation and 22 reports of devices becoming embedded in tissue in association with levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine systems through 12 February 2015. Those were spontaneous adverse-event reports, not rates of complications and not proof that a device caused any particular event.

Keep STI prevention separate
IUDs do not protect against sexually transmitted infections. Health New Zealand recommends condoms as a separate STI-prevention measure. That advice is not an explanation for, or a way to prevent, the reported IUD incident.
