He asked co-host Lisa Millar to take over, then returned to the program later. It was not his first on-air experience: Byrne had previously written about panic attacks during broadcasts in 2020 and the following year.
What happened during the ABC broadcast?
While presenting the Queensland weather on ABC News Breakfast, Byrne stopped and explained what was happening. He said, “I’m actually going to need to stop for a second. Some of you may know that I occasionally get affected by some panic attacks, and actually that’s happening right now, Lisa, maybe I could hand back to you.” CBS News quoted the exchange; a syndicated clip transcript also carries the handoff.
Millar took over the segment. Byrne returned to the broadcast afterward and apologized in case he had worried viewers, according to CBS News’s 15 August 2024 report. That report describes the incident as occurring on Tuesday’s broadcast; PerthNow likewise identifies it as a Tuesday morning Queensland forecast. The available accounts do not establish the interruption’s exact length.
Was this Byrne’s first panic attack on air?
No. In a first-person ABC News account published on 24 February 2022, Byrne wrote, “I had my first-ever panic attack live on TV.” He said that first episode happened in 2020 and recounted another major on-air attack about a year later. ABC’s archived video entry also identifies older footage as showing a 2020 incident.

What has Byrne said about managing anxiety?
In his 2022 account, Byrne said he sought medical help and later learned that his experience was diagnosable and manageable. He described developing tools to recover, while also noting that anxiety could recur. He wrote, “But talking about my anxiety and seeking treatment mean that it’s something I can live with and manage.” Those are Byrne’s reflections on his own experience, not a prediction about his health in 2024 or individualized advice for other people.
The broadcast showed Byrne naming his experience and handing the segment to Millar; it cannot establish a cause or say anything definitive about his condition beyond what he chose to share. Byrne’s account offers his own context for that moment, but it should not be treated as a universal description of panic attacks.
