Father and Son is the first joint album by Art Garfunkel and his son, Art Garfunkel Jr., who record together as Garfunkel & Garfunkel. Released in 2024, it brings together songs chosen from their different musical generations and gives them a modern orchestral setting.
What is Father and Son?
Father and Son is a collaborative album by Art Garfunkel and Art Garfunkel Jr. The official artist site identifies it as the pair’s first joint album and dates its release to 2024. The title reflects the family relationship at the center of the project; the artists perform and record as Garfunkel & Garfunkel. Art Garfunkel’s official Garfunkel & Garfunkel page
The album grew out of a musical connection that began early. In Andy Greene’s Rolling Stone interview, the pair discuss Art Jr. appearing onstage with his father as a very young child. Later, Art Jr. performed Simon & Garfunkel songs in German and released a tribute album. The interview presents the new record as a formal step in a relationship that had already included years of shared musical experience.
How did they choose the songs?
The selections reflect two different listening histories. Art Garfunkel Sr. gravitated toward older material, while his son brought in songs from the Eighties that his father knew less well. Their choices create a conversation across generations rather than a retrospective reunion of Simon & Garfunkel.

| Contributor | Songs named in the interview | What they bring |
|---|---|---|
| Art Garfunkel Sr. | “Let It Be Me,” “Blackbird,” “Father and Son,” and “Vincent” | Older songs connected to his listening history |
| Art Garfunkel Jr. | “Here Comes the Rain Again” and “Time After Time” | Eighties selections his father did not know as well |
The title track, “Father and Son,” is a cover of the Cat Stevens song, not an original written for the album. The interview describes Art Jr.’s Eighties choices as a way to bring his own musical world into the collaboration, alongside his father’s selections.
What gives the album its sound?
Art Jr. wanted a modern orchestral sound. The Rolling Stone interview identifies Felix Gauder as songwriter and producer, Davide Rossi as string arranger, and Ash Howes as producer and mixer. Garfunkel Sr. said he let the others shape the recording experience. Those roles help explain the album’s production approach, but the interview’s descriptions should not be mistaken for separate statements from the collaborators.

Why is “Old Friends” significant?
“Old Friends” is the only song from the Simon & Garfunkel catalog on Father and Son, according to Greene’s interview. Garfunkel Sr. spoke about its portrait of aging and its emotional effect. Its presence acknowledges his best-known musical partnership without making the album a collection of Simon & Garfunkel re-recordings.
Is Father and Son available on vinyl?
The Rolling Stone interview reports that vinyl copies of the album were being signed at the time of the conversation. That establishes that vinyl copies existed, but it does not identify a particular pressing, edition, or current retailer stock. Check the official Garfunkel & Garfunkel page for the artists’ documented listening destinations and project updates; verify format and edition with a retailer before buying.
