Arcane is widely described as an exceptionally expensive animated series, but the often-cited $250 million figure is not a confirmed production-only budget. The Los Angeles Times reported in 2024 that Riot Games spent about that amount across both seasons on production, marketing and awards campaigning. Riot co-founder Marc Merrill later said the headline includes marketing and put the creation budget at 60–75% of that estimate. The available reporting supports calling Arcane one of animation’s most expensive series; it does not establish an audited, like-for-like all-time ranking.
What does the $250 million figure cover?
The Los Angeles Times reported on December 30, 2024, that Riot Games spent about $250 million across Arcane’s two seasons, including production, marketing and awards campaigning. The figure was attributed to League of Legends executive producer Paul Bellezza. It is a reported total, not an audited production budget disclosed by Riot.
In an interview with io9, Riot co-founder Marc Merrill challenged the way the headline was framed: “First of all, the $250 million headline is not even accurate because that includes marketing expenses.” Asked for a ballpark creation budget, he said it was “somewhere between 60 to 75% of that estimate.” That is a rough range relative to the headline figure—not a separately reported exact dollar amount.
So “$250 million to make Arcane” is misleading if it implies that every dollar went into animation and production. The reporting describes total spending on the two-season project, with marketing and awards costs included.

Can Arcane be called the most expensive animated series ever?
The available reporting makes a strong case that Arcane is among the most expensive animated series, but it does not prove an independently verified number-one ranking. To establish that, comparisons would need to use production costs alone and align the number of episodes, time period, currency basis and treatment of marketing, awards spending and distribution payments. The cited reports do not provide an audited, comparable budget survey of other animated series.
The careful conclusion is that Arcane had exceptionally high reported spending. “Far and away the most expensive ever made” goes further than the evidence can verify, particularly when the widely quoted total includes costs beyond production.

Why did the series involve such an ambitious production?
Arcane is based on Riot’s League of Legends. Netflix identifies Christian Linke and Alex Yee as its creators and French animation studio Fortiche Production as a partner with Riot Games. The series builds distinct visual identities for Piltover and Zaun rather than treating its setting as a generic backdrop.
Netflix’s Season Two production feature offers specific examples of that design work. Art director Julien Georgel cited Alphonse Mucha’s The Slav Epic as an influence on the mood and color schemes of Viktor’s commune. Ekko’s finale look included a prototype of his Z Drive and an improvised clock-hand weapon that evoked his bat. These details show the thought behind particular design choices; they do not establish what any one element cost or explain the overall spending total.
Did the spending pay off financially?
Not in the simple sense of the series itself turning a profit. The Los Angeles Times reported that a Riot spokesperson said the show itself was not profitable. The paper also reported that Season Two was “on track to be at least break-even for us financially.” Those statements distinguish the series’ direct financial result from its possible value to Riot’s broader business; the report did not quantify a causal return from the show’s viewership to game revenue.
The same Los Angeles Times report, attributing payment details to Variety, said Netflix paid Riot about $3 million per episode to stream the series, while Tencent paid a further roughly $3 million per episode for China rights. The Times said those payments amounted to less than half the total cost. They are reported distribution payments, not a complete accounting of every revenue source or proof that the series recovered its spending.

How acclaimed was Arcane?
Recognition was substantial, but awards are not a measure of profitability. Netflix’s series listing records four 2022 Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Animated Program, and nine 2022 Annie Awards. It also lists a 2022 Billboard Music Award nomination for the Arcane album. Those honors help explain the series’ cultural profile, but they do not change what the spending and business reports establish.
