Spoiler warning: This article reveals the central twist at the end of Sugar season one, episode six.
John Sugar, the polished Los Angeles private investigator played by Colin Farrell, is revealed to be an alien. The reveal turns what first looks like a contemporary noir detective mystery into a story with an explicit science-fiction dimension.
What is the twist in Sugar?
At the end of season one, episode six, “Go Home,” the series reveals that John Sugar is not human: he is an alien. Until then, the show has invited viewers to read him through the familiar conventions of the private-eye story—an observant detective, a missing-person case, and a shadowy Los Angeles backdrop. The reveal changes the frame around that story without making the investigation or Sugar’s earlier behavior disappear.
Sugar is an eight-episode mystery drama created by Mark Protosevich, with Farrell starring as Sugar and serving as an executive producer. Apple introduced it as a contemporary take on the private-detective story; the alien reveal gives that premise a science-fiction layer rather than replacing it. Apple’s press page and its series listing describe the show and its episodes.

Why did the reveal wait until episode six?
Executive producer Simon Kinberg said the creative team considered placing the reveal earlier or saving it for the end before settling on a point between the middle and finale. As he told TV Insider, “because we wanted the audience to really come to connect with and care about Sugar as a person and not get too bound up in the other aspect of him.”
Kinberg also said the delay gave viewers time to adjust how they saw Sugar and to revisit earlier episodes for clues and Easter eggs. In practice, the timing lets the series establish its detective-story rhythms and its protagonist’s character before asking the audience to reinterpret them.

Does the twist make Sugar a science-fiction show?
It makes science fiction an explicit part of the story, but it does not erase the noir mystery that came before. The case remains part of the narrative, and Sugar remains the character viewers have been following; the reveal adds a new explanation and a different set of questions about him. That shift is the source of the twist’s impact: it changes the audience’s understanding of the show’s point of view as well as its protagonist.
Is it one of the wildest TV twists of all time?
“Wildest” is a matter of taste, not an objectively measurable ranking. Apple’s 2024 season-two renewal announcement used promotional praise describing the twist as “one of the greatest plot twists in recent TV history.” That is an attributed line in a company announcement, not independent evidence of an all-time ranking. The narrower case for calling it wild is clear: the show spends much of its season presenting a detective drama, then makes its central detective an alien near the end of episode six.
