Spoilers for Eileen (2023). Eileen thinks Rebecca has invited her on a Christmas date. At the Polk home, Rebecca reveals the visit’s real purpose: a confrontation tied to Lee Polk and his mother, Mrs. Polk. The revelation destroys Eileen’s expectation of intimacy, and the encounter turns violent. In the film, Eileen fires the weapon. Director William Oldroyd says the shock of that moment becomes the stimulus for her to leave her old life.
What happens at the end of Eileen?
Eileen arrives at the Polk home believing she is spending Christmas with Rebecca. Instead, Rebecca discloses that the visit is connected to Lee Polk and his mother, Mrs. Polk. The supposed date becomes a confrontation, exposing the criminal purpose behind Rebecca’s invitation.
Oldroyd described the dramatic imbalance at the heart of the reveal: “Because Eileen is there thinking it’s a date.” Rebecca’s explanation lets the audience see Eileen register both shock and heartbreak. The turn is not simply a surprise about Rebecca’s intentions; it breaks the future Eileen thought she was being offered.
The confrontation ends with Eileen firing the weapon at Mrs. Polk. Oldroyd has said that the rupture gives Eileen the impetus to leave the life she has been living. The ending’s force comes from that collision: Eileen is manipulated into a violent situation, but her action also marks a decisive break from her previous existence.

What did Anne Hathaway say about the ending?
Hathaway’s comments focus on performing the reveal and the audience’s response, rather than offering a definitive explanation of every plot beat. In a December 6, 2023 interview with SlashFilm, she recalled the intensity of the premiere reaction: “when that moment happens and I felt the floor drop out from underneath the audience, I wasn’t expecting it to be that intense.”
The scene’s narrative design is explained more directly by Oldroyd, who discussed how Eileen’s mistaken belief that she is on a date shapes the audience’s view of Rebecca’s disclosure. Keeping those remarks distinct matters: Hathaway describes playing the moment and witnessing its impact; Oldroyd connects the reveal to Eileen’s shock and eventual departure.

Why does the reveal matter for Eileen?
Rebecca’s invitation appears to promise closeness and escape from Eileen’s constrained life. Its real purpose turns that hope into manipulation. Eileen’s response is therefore both part of a violent confrontation and a test of her agency: the shock pushes her into an irreversible act, after which she leaves her old life.
This reading also fits author and co-screenwriter Ottessa Moshfegh’s description of the story as a search for self-knowledge and truth amid secrets shaped by misogyny, as presented in the film’s official press materials. It is a supported interpretation, not the only possible meaning of the ending.

How does the film ending differ from the novel?
The film adapts Moshfegh’s novel, but it changes both the point of view and a key action in the Polk-house scene.
| Element | Film | Novel |
|---|---|---|
| Point of view | External screen perspective; the film does not use the novel’s first-person narration. | First-person narration filtered through Eileen’s subjective perspective. |
| Who fires the weapon | Eileen fires it at Mrs. Polk. | Rebecca accidentally fires it. |
| Role of the Polk-house event | Oldroyd describes the turn as a stimulus for Eileen to leave her former life. | That specific film-focused explanation of the event’s function is not stated in the cited book-versus-film account. |
Moshfegh explained the perspective shift in a December 8, 2023 Esquire interview: “To take it into the screenplay, it had to become a third-person point of view. I needed to see Eileen from the outside.” In the novel, Eileen’s narration filters what readers know and how they see her; the film instead presents her externally. That change makes the reveal legible through performance, blocking, and the audience’s view of Eileen’s reaction.
