In the same exchange, she explained that another tattoo reminds her to live in the present.
That first-person context matters: not every meaning often assigned to Jolie’s tattoos has been explained by Jolie herself. Some are reported by people described as sources close to her, while others come from later entertainment coverage. The distinction is especially important for translations and spiritual interpretations.
What do the coordinates on Angelina Jolie’s arm stand for?
In 2011, Jolie confirmed that the newest coordinates on her arm marked Brad Pitt’s birthplace, Shawnee, Oklahoma. CBS News reported that the other lines represented the birthplaces of the couple’s six children at the time. Quoting Jolie’s explanation from Extra, CBS reported her saying, “It doesn’t take much investigation to figure that one out. It’s Shawnee, Oklahoma.” The report describes birthplaces; it does not say the coordinates mark adoption locations.

What is Angelina Jolie’s “Stay Gold” tattoo?
Jolie said she and her daughter Vivienne got matching “Stay Gold” tattoos while they were working on the Broadway musical The Outsiders. In a 2024 CR Fashion Book interview, as reported by Marie Claire, Jolie said, “It means so much to us separately and together.” Marie Claire places Jolie’s tattoo on her wrist; the report does not establish where Vivienne’s is located.
Jolie also mentioned a bird tattoo she shares with some of her children, describing it as personal to them. She did not identify which children share it, so it is a separate and less specifically documented family tattoo.

The back designs
A 2016 Vanity Fair report attributed an explanation of new back designs to a Jolie source, who described them as “Buddhist blessings for peace, love and a prosperous life.” That is an attributed account, not a direct explanation from Jolie in the article.
The Khmer-script shoulder tattoo
A 2017 Vogue Italia retrospective describes Khmer-script writing on Jolie’s left shoulder as a Buddhist protection ritual for Maddox. This is secondary reporting, not a definitive, independently verified translation of the inscription.

The Bengal tiger
Vanity Fair reports that Bangkok tattoo artist Sompong Kanphai created Jolie’s lower-back Bengal tiger in 2004 and connects it with her Cambodian citizenship. The article also uses speculative language about sak yant, so that interpretation should not be presented as a confirmed explanation from Jolie.

Yes, retrospective coverage reports that some earlier partner-name or partner-associated tattoos were removed or covered. Vogue Italia discusses those changes in its 2017 account. This history is a reason not to assume that every design shown in an older photograph or article remains unchanged today.
