Which curly-hair look does the headline refer to?
There were two separate appearances, not one hairstyle debut. On September 20, 2024, Glamour reported that Jolie wore “larger-than-life disco curls” for a CR Fashion Book cover shoot for its Fall/Winter 2024 issue. The shoot accompanied the magazine’s cover story about Atelier Jolie.
A month later, Jolie wore another voluminous curly style while promoting Maria. At the October 26, 2024 AFI Fest premiere at Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theatre, her hair was swept to one side and styled with large waves, defined ringlets, and softer, brushed-out texture. Allure’s October 28 account describes the combination of curls and waves; British Vogue’s October 27 coverage characterizes it as wild, 1980s-inspired curls.
What made the October premiere hairstyle distinctive?
Volume and mixed texture
The curls were not uniform, tightly defined ringlets from root to tip. The style combined some springy, distinct curls with fuller, brushed-out waves, creating movement and width. Sweeping the hair to one side made the volume especially visible in the red-carpet look.

Contrasting color
Coverage described darker roots transitioning into honey-blonde lengths; British Vogue called the color bronde. Those descriptions identify the visible contrast without establishing a precise salon color formula.
The red-carpet setting
ABC News identified the event as the October 26 AFI Fest premiere of Maria and described Jolie’s champagne satin gown, black cape, drop earrings, red lipstick, and red nails. The polished evening outfit made the unusually expansive hair a clear departure from her typically sleek red-carpet styling.

How to recreate big, brushed-out curls
Celebrity hairstylist Sarah Potempa’s tutorial for Glamour offers a general way to create a similar curl pattern. It is styling advice, not evidence that Jolie or her team used these steps or products.
- Prepare the hair. Start with volumizing shampoo and conditioner, then apply heat protectant before using a hot tool.
- Create tight curls. Use a small-barrel curling iron to form springy curls. Potempa’s tutorial names the Beachwaver S.75 as an example of a small barrel; it does not identify it as a tool used on Jolie.
- Alternate curl direction. Vary the direction of the curls to build texture throughout the style rather than making every section fall the same way.
- Let the curls cool completely. Wait before handling them so the curled shape can set.
- Brush out for volume. Use a wide-tooth comb or styling brush to loosen the curls into larger, softer waves. Leave them more defined if you prefer a tighter finish.
- Add texture if desired. Finish with texturizing spray for grit and lift. Potempa describes the spray as a way to add texture and a more natural-looking matte finish.
For the closest match to the premiere’s overall shape, the key change is from small, defined curls to a brushed-out finish. The tutorial supports choosing a small barrel and then loosening the curls; it does not compare brands or report product testing. Glamour’s tutorial contains the full stylist-attributed instructions.

What is known about the products used on Jolie?
The cited coverage does not establish which curling iron, heat protectant, or finishing products Jolie’s hairstylist used. The Beachwaver S.75 appears only as Potempa’s example of a small-barrel iron in the general tutorial. It should not be described as Jolie’s tool, and the same distinction applies to the other suggested styling products.
The September cover shoot also carried a subject beyond the hair: in the interview excerpt reproduced by Glamour, Jolie described Atelier Jolie as “a space—a home, really—for people to create and be inspired,” with artists and designers from around the world and an invitation to build community through design.
