In an interview published by Variety on November 25, 2024, Baldwin was asked about the film’s premiere. “No, I haven’t seen the final cut,” he replied. He said he had received an earlier rough cut.

Baldwin also said he hoped the film would be released and earn back its investors’ money. He described waiving his fee and backend, and said he believed Matthew Hutchins was the sole owner, adding that he could be wrong. Those are Baldwin’s descriptions of the financial arrangement and ownership, not independently established facts.
When and where did Rust premiere?
Rust had its world premiere on November 20, 2024, at the International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography Camerimage in Toruń, Poland. Baldwin did not attend. Director Joel Souza introduced the film, which was dedicated to cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, according to the Associated Press report from the premiere.

Baldwin’s Variety interview took place at the Torino Film Festival in Turin, Italy, a separate event from the premiere in Poland.
How the film was completed after Halyna Hutchins’ death
Hutchins was killed and Souza was injured in an October 2021 shooting on the New Mexico set. The production later resumed. AP reported that Hutchins had filmed more than half of the movie; Bianca Cline completed the cinematography, using Hutchins’ notes to help preserve her visual approach.

At the premiere, Souza described the aim of completing the film as preserving Hutchins’ work and honoring her. The film’s ending includes a dedication to her. The fatal scene from the real set incident does not appear in the film, according to the AP review.
What is Rust about?
The Western follows a 13-year-old boy sentenced to hang after accidentally killing a rancher. He escapes with his estranged grandfather, played by Baldwin. The film’s public reception and release took place against the backdrop of the fatal 2021 set shooting; Baldwin’s interview did not resolve disputed legal or financial questions surrounding the production.
Where was Rust released?
Rust received a limited US theatrical and on-demand release in May 2025. The Irish Times reported on May 8, 2025, that it was showing on roughly 115 US screens and was available on demand, including through Prime Video and Apple TV+. That is a report of its release-period availability, not confirmation that the film remains in either service’s catalogue today.
