Endeavor from My Hero Academia is a compelling example of an attempted redemption arc—but the story leaves room to question whether changed behavior can repair the harm he caused his family. His development is more persuasive when judged by responsibility and sustained action than by whether other characters trust or forgive him. The available evidence supports a close look at Endeavor, not a reliable ranking of redemption arcs across anime.
What makes a redemption arc feel earned?
Character growth and redemption are related, but they are not the same. Growth means a character changes their understanding or behavior. Redemption asks for more: the character must confront the harm they caused, take responsibility without demanding praise, and make sustained efforts to repair what they can. The story also has to reckon with consequences for the people who were harmed.
That distinction matters because a dramatic change of heart is not itself an apology, restitution, or forgiveness. A useful way to assess an arc is to ask:
- Does the character acknowledge what they did and who was affected?
- Do they change their conduct consistently, including when there is no immediate reward?
- Do they accept consequences and respect the limits set by people they hurt?
- Does the narrative allow those people to withhold forgiveness?
- Is change built through decisions over time, rather than settled by a single emotional reveal?
These are interpretive questions, not a formal scoring system. They help distinguish a believable attempt at accountability from a simple turn toward heroism.

Why Endeavor is a strong, unresolved case
From villain-coded arrogance to changed conduct
In an interview on the My Hero Academia anime’s official website, Tetsu Inada, Endeavor’s voice actor, describes giving the character an early, heel-like, villain-coded impression intended to make viewers uncomfortable. The same interview discusses Endeavor’s relationship to All Might and his response to a changed hero landscape. That shift gives his arc a meaningful starting point: he must contend with a world and a role that no longer fit his old assumptions. Inada’s interview on the official anime site is a production-side perspective, not a definitive moral judgment on whether Endeavor has redeemed himself.
Trust built through cooperation is not universal forgiveness
The interview also describes Endeavor listening to Hawks and coming to trust him through their work together. That is evidence of a changed relationship and a different way of working with another hero. It does not establish that everyone affected by Endeavor’s past has reconciled with him, or that trust from a colleague repairs harm within his family.

The unresolved test is what accountability can repair
Endeavor is interesting precisely because the question is not answered by a public act of heroism alone. A redemption reading depends on whether his actions show responsibility and sustained change; the harder question is what those actions can repair in private relationships. Viewers may reasonably disagree about whether the story earns that change or whether it gives enough weight to the people he harmed. Forgiveness belongs to those people, not to the audience’s preferred ending.
Bakugo shows why growth is not automatically redemption
Bakugo is a useful contrast, but the evidence for his development should not be stretched into an equivalent redemption case. In an interview on the official anime site, his voice actor, Nobuhiko Okamoto, reflects on Bakugo learning that he does not have to overcome every obstacle alone. That supports a reading of personal growth; it does not by itself establish an arc of moral atonement for serious wrongdoing. Okamoto’s interview on the official anime site speaks to development, not a documented passage from antagonist to redeemed character.

Why this is not a cross-anime ranking
A list claiming to name anime’s “best” redemption arcs needs comparable evidence for each character: the harm they caused, their response to it, the consistency of changed behavior, and how the story treats repair and forgiveness. The available sources support a focused discussion of Endeavor and a limited contrast with Bakugo, but not a trustworthy ranking across series. Zuko should not be used to fill that gap: Avatar: The Last Airbender is an American animated series, not an anime.
