Dhawan plays Pramod Sinha, a former 1970s movie star whose home and past connect the fictional character to the actor’s real screen history. Several modest-budget films helped establish his reputation. Scroll specifically describes Do Raha (1971), Piya Ka Ghar (1972), Annadata (1972) and Samjhauta (1973) as doing well at the box office. Other representative titles from the period include Honeymoon (1973) and Hawas (1974); they broaden the picture of his work, but the cited profile does not identify each as a box-office success. In 2018, he also described his career as satisfying: “I’ve had a most satisfying innings, and I couldn’t have asked for more.” In the same year, he said he had worked in both films and television. The profiles record personal estimates, not audited career totals: Dhawan told Scroll he had made “40-45 films as a hero” and appeared in “nearly 18 serials.”

Anil Dhawan is Varun Dhawan’s uncle. Anil’s younger brother is filmmaker David Dhawan, Varun’s father. There is also a connection through cinema: Sriram Raghavan, who directed Anil in Andhadhun, had earlier directed Varun in Badlapur (2015).

What did Andhadhun’s renewed attention mean to Dhawan?
The film brought renewed attention to an actor whose best-known early work belonged to a different era of Hindi cinema. In his 2018 interview with The Indian Express, Dhawan said, “I am experiencing the same adulation that I did in the 1970s.” He also explained his approach to character parts: “I still play characters which are good and follow the rules.” A 2023 Indian Express retrospective also covered his response to the attention after Andhadhun.
