Andrew Garfield reportedly told GQ in October 2025 that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 is not happening and that he does not believe it ever will. His answer addresses the long-discussed third film—not every possibility of playing Spider-Man again.
What did Andrew Garfield say about The Amazing Spider-Man 3?
In a GQ fan-question video, Garfield reportedly responded to rumors that a third film was secretly in development: “It’s not happening and I don’t believe it ever will, but sweet of you to want it to happen.” ComicBook.com and GamesRadar+ reported the answer in October 2025. ComicBook.com’s report and GamesRadar+’s coverage attribute the line to that video.
The answer is the clearest reported update on the proposed Garfield-led sequel: no third film is established by the sources reviewed. It is not a statement that Garfield would never appear as Spider-Man in any other project, nor an official announcement from Sony ruling out every possible future film.
Why was the planned sequel never made?
Sony had announced plans for third and fourth installments before The Amazing Spider-Man 2 arrived, according to ComicBook.com’s retrospective. The third film did not materialize.

Co-writer Alex Kurtzman, speaking about his involvement in a ScreenRant interview as quoted by ComicBook.com, said: “You know, we never wrote it. We never wrote it. I did 2 and that was it for me.” That describes Kurtzman’s own work; it is not a studio explanation for the sequel’s fate.
The reason the project stalled is not definitively established by these accounts. GamesRadar+ cautions against treating the second film’s reception as the sole explanation and points to Sony’s partnership with Marvel as another possible factor. Neither report establishes a single official cause.

Could Garfield return as Spider-Man in another kind of film?
Garfield’s later comments leave room for a distinction between the abandoned sequel and a hypothetical future appearance. In August 2026, TheWrap reported that he would want a return to be “very, very odd” and “very strange,” and that he wanted something “completely unexpected” and “very left field.” He floated a road-trip movie as one possible idea. Sony’s 2011 announcement identified The Amazing Spider-Man as a film starring Andrew Garfield and gave its planned release date as July 3, 2012. Sony Pictures’ announcement provides the official starting point for the series, while the reports on the proposed sequel explain that the announced follow-ups never became a third Garfield-led film.
