Lucasfilm confirms that Cassian steals a prototype TIE Avenger in the opening arc, while interviews with Star Wars and Andor sound designers describe sound and silence as deliberate creative choices. None of those sources identifies the alleged rule or connects it to a particular scene.
What spaceship does Cassian steal in Andor Season 2?
In the season’s opening arc, Cassian infiltrates a Sienar research facility and steals a prototype TIE Avenger, according to Lucasfilm’s May 20, 2025 interview with creator Tony Gilroy. That is the specific ship theft confirmed by the official account. It does not say the theft breaks a long-standing spaceship rule.
Does Andor Season 2 break a 48-year-old Star Wars rule?
The exact claim remains unverified: the available sources do not name the rule, establish when it began, or point to a Season 2 scene that breaks it. In particular, the ship-theft account does not connect the TIE Avenger to a rule about how spacecraft behave or are depicted.
That distinction matters because a familiar Star Wars convention is not, by itself, proof of a specific rule or of a new exception. Without a named rule and a directly sourced example, the headline’s assertion cannot be treated as established fact.

Why is there sound in space in Star Wars?
Sound in space is a deliberate storytelling convention in Star Wars, not a claim about real-world acoustics. Sound designer Ben Burtt explained the choice this way in an excerpt published by FilmSound.org: “So we threw out the physic ideas and went with sound in space, which turned out to be a lot more fun.”
That explanation supports the idea that audible spacecraft and battles are part of the franchise’s dramatic language. It does not establish that Andor Season 2 overturns that convention.

Does Andor use silence in space?
Andor’s sound team has discussed silence as a scene-level tool. In a May 7, 2025 Television Academy interview, supervising sound editor and sound designer David Acord described an “ear break” as a pause that can create tenderness or tension. He said silence can let viewers become nervous and build anticipation without sound.
That account shows that the team thinks carefully about what audiences hear and what they do not. It does not identify a silent-space scene that breaks a 48-year-old rule, so it should not be used as evidence for that specific claim.
