Ana de Armas was nominated for the 2023 Academy Award for actress in a leading role for Blonde. The historic distinction was specific: contemporary reports described her as the first Cuban woman or actress nominated in the leading-actress category—not the first Cuban person ever nominated for an Oscar. Michelle Yeoh won the award.

What was Ana de Armas nominated for?

The Academy announced on January 24, 2023, that de Armas was a nominee for actress in a leading role for Blonde, in the 95th Academy Awards. The Academy’s nomination announcement lists her among the five nominees in the category.

At the ceremony, Michelle Yeoh won for Everything Everywhere All at Once, according to the Academy’s 2023 results. De Armas’s achievement was the nomination, not an Oscar win.

What made the nomination historic?

People en Español described de Armas as the first Cuban actress nominated for an Academy Award in a leading role. The Associated Press likewise described her as the first Cuban woman nominated for best actress. Those reports refer to the leading-actress distinction; they do not mean she was the first Cuban Oscar nominee in any category. People en Español noted that actor Andy Garcia had previously received a supporting-actor nomination.

Read the claim with its category attached: de Armas was reported as the first Cuban woman or actress nominated in the best-actress/leading-actress category. The distinction is about representation in that particular Oscar race, rather than a win or a broader first across all Oscar categories. See the contemporary accounts from People en Español and the Associated Press.

What is Blonde—and is it a documentary?

Blonde is not a documentary or a straightforward factual biography of Marilyn Monroe. Netflix describes it as a fictional portrait and identifies Joyce Carol Oates’s bestselling 2000 novel as its source. The film is a fictional reimagining, so it should not be treated as a documentary account of Monroe’s life. Netflix’s background on the film discusses the adaptation.

De Armas described the movie’s approach to Netflix Queue this way: “Our movie is not linear or conventional; it is meant to be a sensorial and emotional experience.” That framing helps explain why the film’s presentation differs from a conventional documentary chronology; it does not make the story a factual record.

How did de Armas prepare for the role?

The Associated Press reported that de Armas prepared for the role for a year. In the same report, she described the emotional weight of the work: “I wasn’t in character all the time. But … I felt that heaviness and that weight in my shoulders. And I felt that sadness.” She also said, “She was all I thought about. She was all I dreamed about. She was all I talked about.” These are her reflections as quoted by the AP, not independently verified production details.

How are Oscar nominees chosen?

In its 2023 announcement, the Academy said members of each of its 17 branches determine nominees in their respective categories. It also reported receiving nomination ballots from 80 countries and called participation the highest in the Academy’s history at that time. Those are the Academy’s contemporaneous figures about its process and participation, not measures of the film’s popularity or de Armas’s performance.
