How Pikachu Was Created: The Design, the Squirrel Cheeks, and the Cut Evolution

Pikachu began as a practical design for a Game Boy game—not as a mouse character or a plan to become the franchise’s star. Designer Atsuko Nishida recalls building its original form pixel by pixel, while Ken Sugimori and Koji Nishino describe how game specifications, technical limits, and later animation shaped what players came to recognize.

Who designed Pikachu?

Atsuko Nishida created Pikachu’s original design, but the character emerged from a collaborative process. Ken Sugimori described Pokémon design as a group effort: “The process of designing not just Pikachu but Pokémon in general was complicated, with multiple people putting their ideas together and modifying the design to create a single character.” Nishida’s account supplies the specific starting point: she designed Pikachu and its evolution, Raichu, to meet the game’s requirements.

The designers’ recollections come from a retrospective interview published by The Pokémon Company International on July 26, 2018. It is a record of what Nishida, Sugimori, and Nishino remembered—not a complete production archive. Read the creators’ interview.

How did the original design take shape?

A brief shaped by the game

Nishida says the specifications called for an Electric-type Pokémon that would evolve twice. She was not told to make it cute. The brief, rather than a preexisting idea of a mascot, gave her the design problem to solve.

Designed directly on the computer

Nishida did not begin with a paper sketch. As she put it, “I didn’t draw an illustration on paper, but went straight to the computer screen and punched in the dots.” Working directly in pixels produced the compact, dumpling-like shape, with no sharp division between head and body. That approach suited a character that had to read on the original Game Boy’s low-resolution, monochrome display.

Squirrels inspired the cheeks

The cheek idea came from squirrels, not from a plan to make a mouse. “I was obsessed with squirrels,” Nishida said. She liked their comical movement and drew on the way they store food in their cheek pouches. In her design thinking, those pouches could hold electricity. She contrasted squirrels, whose cheeks swell, with hamsters, which puff up across the body.

Nishida says she had not intended Pikachu to be mouse-shaped. Sugimori recalls that the “Mouse Pokémon” classification came later, in setting text written by Satoshi Tajiri. The distinction matters: the design inspiration and the later category name were not the same decision.

Details had to communicate in pixels

The zigzag tail made Pikachu’s Electric type visible. Nishida says the marking on its back helped avoid an entirely smooth surface in battle scenes, when the player saw the Pokémon from behind. She thought the black tips on its ears might be a remnant of the original dumpling-like design. Sugimori emphasized that details also had to remain legible in black and white on the Game Boy.

Nishida connected the name to the character’s qualities: “pika” suggested a flash of light, while “chu” was chosen for its sound and the Pokémon’s small size. That account, like the cheek inspiration, points to a design developed from the game’s visual and conceptual needs rather than from a predetermined mouse motif.

Why was Gorochu removed?

The planned evolution line once extended beyond Raichu. Nishida recalls a further evolution called Gorochu, with fangs, horns, and a thunder-god appearance. It was cut before release; the interview does not establish that a finished design or playable version appeared in a released game.

Nishino and Sugimori attribute the removal to changes in the game’s specifications and limited data capacity. Pikachu’s line was revised to evolve only once, and the team had to work within the original game’s storage limits. Sugimori said Gorochu was not removed because its appearance was a problem.

How did Pikachu become a rare find?

Sugimori remembers printing out the completed pixel drawings and asking staff which Pokémon they liked. Pikachu won decisively in that internal preference exercise, and it was among the fifteen Pokémon selected for official artwork in the instruction manual. The interview gives no sample size or vote totals, so this is a creator’s recollection—not a quantified poll of players or the public. Sugimori also says he did not know how players would respond.

Nishino recalls making Pikachu hard to find in Viridian Forest because he liked it. The rarity strategy backfired in a useful way: players sought out the scarce Pokémon. Pikachu first appeared as a wild Pokémon in Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green, released in Japan for Game Boy in 1996.

How did the animated series change Pikachu’s shape?

The animated series required a character capable of varied movement and expression. Sugimori says animation influenced Pikachu’s later silhouette: “While Pikachu was originally very short and stout, we gradually gave it a more defined neck and elongated its spine.” Those changes made it easier to animate a wider range of poses and actions. The familiar animated-era outline was therefore not identical to the original pixel-first design.

Sugimori also attributed the choice of Pikachu as Ash’s partner in the animated series to director Kunihiko Yuyama, who wanted a Pokémon outside the game’s three initial partner choices. That is Sugimori’s retrospective explanation in the 2018 interview.

What the creators’ accounts establish—and what they leave open

The interview explains the design’s practical origins: Nishida’s pixel work, the Electric-type brief, squirrel-inspired cheeks, and constraints of the Game Boy. It also records how decisions by other staff and the later needs of animation affected Pikachu’s development. It does not turn every unanswered question about a character’s origins into settled fact. Pokémon Support says matters not answered in the games, movies, or television are intended to remain open to fan imagination and interpretation; theories beyond the creators’ stated recollections should be treated as speculation.
