Bob Iger described the idea as a way to bring Disney stories into games and other experiences, reach younger audiences, and deepen Disney’s partnership with Epic. He offered a vision, not a release date or a list of confirmed features.
What did Disney and Epic announce?
The companies said they would build an open, persistent, social games and entertainment universe connected to Fortnite and powered by Unreal Engine. The planned experience was to draw on Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar, and other properties. The announcement described opportunities for users to play, watch, shop, engage with characters and stories, create experiences, and share content.
Disney also announced a $1.5 billion investment to acquire an equity stake in Epic Games. The transaction was subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. The announcement did not provide a launch date for the universe.
Epic’s announcement described its audience as more than 100 million active players and creators. That is the figure given in the February 2024 announcement; the cited passage does not specify a measurement window or methodology, so it should not be read as a current count.

What did Iger say the experience might become?
In prepared remarks for Disney’s Q1 FY24 earnings call, Iger described an experience integrating Disney storytelling into Fortnite and enabling consumers to “play, watch, create, and shop for both digital and physical goods.” He called the initiative Disney’s “biggest entry” into video games and tied its appeal to reaching younger audiences where they already spend time.
When Guggenheim analyst Michael Morris asked why the investment made sense, what the product might look like, and when it could arrive, Iger described an idea for “a gigantic Disney World a la Fortnite” that could live alongside Fortnite and be interconnected with it. He envisaged users playing games Disney made, making games themselves, watching and interacting, and potentially shopping.
Iger also raised short-form video or content distribution as possibilities. Those were speculative examples in his answer, not announced or confirmed features. The companies’ announcement did not set a launch date, and Iger did not supply one in response to the timing question.
Why did Disney want an equity stake in Epic?
Iger said Disney had tried video games in different ways and that licensing had been its most successful approach. He described the Epic relationship as a chance to participate more directly in a connected experience rather than only license Disney properties for games.

He said the $1.5 billion stake gave Disney “skin in the game”: in his account, the investment would strengthen the partnership while Disney and Epic built the proposed world. Iger also said the structure would let Disney pursue the opportunity without creating too much risk for the company. Those remarks explain his stated rationale; they do not independently establish the investment’s eventual returns or risk profile.
| Approach Iger discussed | What it means in his account |
|---|---|
| Licensing | Iger called this Disney’s most successful previous approach to video games: other parties could use Disney properties in games. |
| Epic collaboration with an equity stake | The announced plan paired a Disney–Epic project to build an interconnected experience with Disney’s proposed investment in Epic, giving Disney a more direct role in the partnership. |
What did Iger say later about the ambition?
In a later recap of Iger’s remarks at a Morgan Stanley conference, Disney quoted him calling the planned experience “a deep, rich, fully immersive, engaging experience for consumers.” He also framed it as a way to extend Disney intellectual property into another medium. The recap described an ambition, not a report that the experience had launched or that those goals had been realized.
What is known about the project’s status?
The February 2024 announcement establishes what Disney and Epic proposed and that the investment was then subject to closing conditions. The cited materials do not establish whether the investment later closed or whether the universe launched. It would therefore be inaccurate, on the basis of these materials, to present the project’s announced activities as features consumers can currently use.
