That report does not establish that the beta is still operating in 2026. Amazon’s current production-placement rules and its newer shopping features describe related but distinct activities.
What Amazon announced in 2022
A May 4, 2022 report by Laurent Giret at Thurrott.com described Amazon’s Virtual Product Placement as a beta introduced during Newsfront 2022. The concept was to insert CGI products into shows after shooting had finished, rather than arrange every placement during production.
The report named Reacher, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, the Bosch franchise, Making the Cut and Leverage: Redemption among early participating shows. These are examples reported at the time, not a current list of eligible titles.
Henrik Bastin, CEO of Fabel Entertainment and executive producer of Bosch: Legacy, said the approach could let producers review the final cut and identify where products might fit naturally. That is a production-side view quoted in the 2022 report, not evidence that later insertions are always seamless.

Is the CGI placement beta still active?
Its current status is not established by the available official sources. They do not confirm whether the 2022 beta continued, what titles or territories might qualify today, or what commercial terms apply. Nor do they establish that Amazon’s newer shopping features evolved from the beta. Treat the 2022 description as historical, not as a current offer to brands.
How placements are controlled in Amazon productions
Amazon MGM Studios’ production policy allows placements to be proposed in certain circumstances, subject to approval. A placement requires pre-approval from the creative executive, production executive, production company’s legal counsel and Promotions and Partnerships team, along with documentation and legal review.

The policy restricts categories including tobacco, weapons, alcohol, medicines, medical devices, gambling and political products, and prohibits placements in several types of content. It also limits how products may be presented:
- Content should not encourage viewers to buy the product or include advertising claims, prices or availability information.
- A placement should not imply positive product attributes or give the product undue prominence.
- Contracts must preserve Amazon’s creative control and its right not to include a product. The policy states that ultimate creative control belongs to Amazon Studios and that placement is at its sole discretion.
These rules explain the approval and creative constraints around placements generally. They do not specifically document the technology or current operation of the 2022 CGI beta.

How CGI placement differs from shopping features

In a September 10, 2026 announcement, Amazon said Shop the Show was adding a Shop tab in X-Ray and a Shop the Scene feature using Amazon Lens, with expansion to more than 8,000 titles in the US. Amazon said Shop the Scene was available through its iOS and Android shopping app across more than 600 titles. The feature helps viewers find products related to on-screen content or similar items inspired by outfits and décor; Amazon did not say those products had been inserted into the show after filming. What the reported performance figures do—and do not—show
The 2022 Thurrott report attributed one campaign result to Amazon: a 6.9% increase in brand favorability and a 14.7% increase in purchase intent. It did not identify the brand, study design, sample, market or measurement period, so those figures cannot establish typical results for other campaigns.

Amazon Ads’ 2026 Upfront recap separately reported 6x higher brand search, 4x more detail-page views, 4x more add-to-cart actions and 5x higher purchase rates for its interactive video ad formats. Those are Amazon Ads’ figures for interactive advertising, not independent findings about CGI product placement.

For brands, the 2022 report is evidence that Amazon described a post-production CGI placement beta at that time—not confirmation of an open partner program now. Any current eligibility or terms would need direct confirmation from Amazon. The published production policy makes clear that placements remain subject to review and Amazon’s creative control.
