Howard Stern’s “King of All Media” title is a self-styled identity, not a measured ranking—but it reflects a career that has moved from terrestrial radio into television, books, film, satellite radio and, in 2026, streaming video. He is still making a live radio show for SiriusXM, while an adapted, filmed version is also reaching HBO Max.
Why is Howard Stern called the King of All Media?
The phrase captures Stern’s reach across formats rather than a formal industry distinction. His career began in radio, where he built a national profile, and expanded into television, publishing and film. Later, he moved his show from terrestrial broadcasting to SiriusXM, and the 2026 HBO Max adaptation adds a streaming-video version to that history.

SiriusXM’s career retrospective traces his path through college and local radio, including WRNW, WCCC, W4, DC-101 and WNBC, then television, books, the 1997 film Private Parts and the move to satellite radio. SiriusXM describes Stern as having “redefined broadcasting”; that is the company’s assessment, not an independently measured ranking.
Radio built the audience
Stern became nationally prominent in the 1980s during a 20-year run at New York station WXRK. The Associated Press reported that the show reached a peak of syndication in 60 markets and more than 20 million listeners. Those are historical peak-era figures; the AP passage does not identify the precise year measured, and they are not estimates of his current audience.

Television, books and film widened the persona
Radio remained the foundation, but Stern’s career also included television, published books and the 1997 film Private Parts, based on his life and career. He later served as a judge on America’s Got Talent from 2012 to 2015, according to the AP. These ventures made “all media” a description of the range of his work, not proof that he led every medium.
Is Howard Stern still on the radio?
Yes. SiriusXM announced on August 31, 2026, that the new season of The Howard Stern Show would begin September 14 with live episodes on Mondays. The company said Stern would continue with it through 2028 for the exclusive live show and library. Those details come from SiriusXM’s announcement; it is a corporate release, not independent reporting on audience size or performance.
Rank #2
In December 2025, Stern’s official site quoted him announcing three more years on SiriusXM and saying the arrangement allowed a “more flexible schedule.” He said, “I’m happy to announce that I’ve figured out a way to have it all: more free time and continuing to be on the radio.” The later SiriusXM announcement provides the current stated term and schedule.
What changed with the HBO Max version?
SiriusXM announced that an adapted, streamable episode would debut on HBO Max on Thursday, September 17, 2026, with later episodes scheduled for Thursdays. The release said 40 cameras would capture the conversation for the adaptation. This is a filmed version adapted from the live SiriusXM show—not a separate live broadcast.
