Amazon is scaling back a significant part of its first-party AAA development, particularly its work on MMOs, while giving more attention to casual games and Luna’s social party-game lineup. That is a change in what Amazon is developing—not an immediate shutdown of every MMO it publishes or operates. The clearest examples are New World, which has a scheduled shutdown date, and Throne and Liberty, whose Western operations are planned to transfer to another operator.
What Amazon said it was changing
In October 2025, Amazon VP Steve Boom said the company would “halt a significant amount” of its first-party AAA game development, “specifically around MMOs.” Amazon also announced significant role reductions at its Irvine and San Diego studios and its central publishing team. The statement describes a major retreat from part of Amazon’s own development portfolio; it does not say that every MMO service would close. The Verge reported the memo on October 28, 2025.
In the same memo, Amazon pointed to the revamped Luna and its catalog of social party games, while saying Studio 5 would focus on casual and AI-focused games optimized for Luna. It also cited a successful closed alpha for March of Giants and ongoing work with Crystal Dynamics on a Tomb Raider game and Maverick Games on an open-world driving game. Those were project statuses reported in October 2025, not guarantees of current release plans.
What happened to Amazon’s MMO services?
Amazon’s development pullback has not meant the same thing for every game. New World has a final content update and a scheduled end of service; Throne and Liberty is planned to change operators in the West. Amazon said it would continue supporting Lost Ark and Throne and Liberty after the 2025 announcement, but its later plan for Throne and Liberty is a transfer of responsibilities, not a permanent Amazon-operated service.

New World: content ends before service does
Amazon’s October 28, 2025 New World update said Season 10: Nighthaven would be the final content release and that Amazon intended to keep servers running through 2026. It also promised at least six months’ notice before changes affecting players’ ability to play. Steam’s current listing provides the later schedule: New World: Aeternum is due to go offline on all platforms on January 31, 2027. The listing says the game was to be delisted on January 15, 2026, a date that had passed by October 2026.
Throne and Liberty: a planned operator transfer
Amazon’s transition announcement says Western publishing and live operations are planned to move to FirstSpark Games / NC in Q4 2026. Its FAQ says player accounts, characters, progression, inventory, platforms, and game data will be preserved by default, subject to the opt-out process. Players will need to accept NC’s terms after the transition. The announcement describes a transfer of operations, not a closure.

What “party games” means on Luna
Amazon’s current Luna offering includes GameNight party and social games for Prime members at no additional cost, according to the Amazon Games site. In its October 6, 2026 Luna update, Amazon listed that month’s content and described games for solo play or time with family and friends. One featured title, Space Metal Mania, was described as couch co-op and compatible with Luna Remote Play. Luna’s monthly catalog can change, so the October lineup is a dated snapshot rather than a promise of ongoing availability.
GameNight is designed for a living-room TV: players scan a QR code and use their smartphones as individual controllers, according to Amazon’s GameNight overview. You do not need to buy a Luna Controller just to join a GameNight session. The Luna Controller is a separate physical device, model T28B69, documented by Amazon as an accessory for Luna; whether it is useful depends on the particular game and its controller support.

How to read the shift
The change is best understood as a shift in investment and service models, not a simple swap in which Amazon replaces every MMO with party games. Amazon is reducing first-party AAA development, with MMOs specifically named, while promoting Luna’s social and casual experiences. The games Amazon publishes or operates can have different outcomes: a content cutoff and shutdown, as with New World, or a handoff to another operator, as planned for Throne and Liberty.
As of October 2026, Amazon’s studio site still promotes GameNight, while the New World shutdown and Throne and Liberty transfer remain the relevant announced service changes. The available announcements do not establish a definitive current status for the planned Lord of the Rings MMO, so it should not be treated as a confirmed cancellation or active project here.
