Sikhs are often seen in photographs of early twentieth-century Shanghai as uniformed policemen—but surviving images also record family portraits, work, friendships and social events. Read together, these photographs show both the public visibility of Sikh officers in the International Settlement and the limits of treating that police presence as the whole story of Sikh life in the city.
Why Sikh policemen appear in photographs of old Shanghai
Sikh officers served in a branch of the Shanghai Municipal Police, the force responsible for policing the International Settlement. Their conspicuous presence in street scenes reflected an institutional role: policing was part of the settlement’s system of governance, shaped by foreign power and unequal political arrangements.
Historian Isabella Jackson examines the Sikh branch of the force in “The Raj on Nanjing Road: Sikh Policemen in Treaty-Port Shanghai,” published in Modern Asian Studies in 2012. She connects the officers’ work in Shanghai to British imperial authority and Indian sub-imperial power. Jackson’s formulation is that “on the streets of Shanghai, and not Shanghai alone, British power had an Indian face.” The phrase is an interpretation of the force’s place in imperial governance—not a description of Sikh identity as a whole. Read Jackson’s article in Modern Asian Studies.
What the 1905 police photograph shows—and what its caption says
One well-documented image offers a direct view of the police presence. The Historical Photographs of China archive catalogs record Jn-d01 as “Sikh policemen (SMP), mounted and dismounted, Shanghai.” It attributes the photographs to René Tillot and estimates their date as 1905. The black-and-white prints were mounted on a postcard numbered 217, series 5.

The mount’s bilingual caption reads: “Cliché R. Tillot / 217. – Shanghai. – Police Internationale – Les Sikhs / Shanghai. – International Police Force – Sikhs”. It is useful historical evidence of how the image was presented to viewers at the time. “International Police Force” is the caption’s wording; the archive identifies the officers as belonging to the Shanghai Municipal Police. View the archive record for Jn-d01.
The image establishes that mounted and dismounted Sikh policemen were photographed in Shanghai and circulated in postcard form. It does not, on its own, show how typical the scene was, explain the officers’ individual lives, or represent the city’s Sikh population.

Beyond the uniform: the Sangha family photographs
A different perspective comes from the Sangha, Ranjit Singh collection, also cataloged by Historical Photographs of China. Its record describes fifty images spanning portraits of family members and servants, Kartar Singh and colleagues in the Customs, friends in the Shanghai Municipal Police, and social occasions. Among the events named is a gathering marking Rabindranath Tagore’s 1924 visit.
The collection’s range makes it possible to look beyond official police imagery toward family and public life. But fifty photographs in one archival collection are not a census or a representative sample of the entire Sikh community. The catalog describes what this collection contains, not how common each experience was. Explore the Sangha, Ranjit Singh collection record.

How to read these photographs responsibly
Photographs are evidence, but their meaning depends on who made them, when they were made, how they were captioned and how they entered an archive. A postcard image of policemen and a family collection answer different questions; neither should be made to stand for every Sikh experience in Shanghai.
- Check the date and its certainty. Jn-d01 is estimated to date to 1905, rather than assigned an exact verified day or year.
- Keep the maker and collection history attached. The archive attributes Jn-d01 to René Tillot; the Sangha photographs are cataloged as a named collection.
- Distinguish subject from caption. The wording “International Police Force” belongs to the historical postcard mount, not to a modern institutional description.
- Notice what kind of life is pictured. Police work, street visibility, family portraits and social events are different subjects, and each offers a partial view.
- Check reuse terms before reproducing images. The archive records do not by themselves establish permission to republish a photograph.
What the photographs cannot establish
The available records and scholarship cited here do not establish a defensible total for Shanghai’s Sikh population, a complete demographic chronology, or a full account of when and why the remaining Sikh community left the city. A Government of India encyclopedia search excerpt has been cited for recruitment beginning in the 1880s and for the existence of Sikh gurdwaras in the settlement, but the underlying volume could not be consulted for verification; those details should therefore not be treated here as independently established facts. Historic Shanghai likewise discusses archival images of Sikhs in official photographs and street scenes while noting that the community’s later history is incompletely documented. Together, these materials widen the view without claiming to tell the whole history.
