To French braid your own hair, start with three sections at the crown, cross the outer sections over the center, and add a little loose hair to each outer section before its next crossing. Keep repeating that add-and-cross pattern down your scalp; when there is no loose hair left to add, finish with a regular three-strand braid and secure the ends.
What you need
- A brush to detangle your hair.
- A small hair elastic or tie to secure the finished braid.
- A mirror can help you check the braid’s placement, though you will also need to work by touch.
You do not need a particular styling product or brush. If your hair feels very slippery, one tutorial suggests practicing when it is not freshly washed, but that is an optional styling tip, not a requirement.
How to French braid your own hair
- Detangle your hair. Brush through it so knots do not interrupt the sections as you braid.
- Make three sections. At the hairline or crown, gather three roughly similar sections and keep them distinct between your fingers. A smaller starting section makes a narrower braid; there is no universal starting size.
- Make the first crossings. Cross the right outer section over the center. The section that was on the right is now the center. Then cross the left outer section over the new center.
- Add hair on the right. Before the next right-side crossing, gather a small amount of nearby loose hair and combine it with the right outer section. Cross that combined section over the center.
- Add hair on the left. Gather a small amount of loose hair from the left side and combine it with the left outer section. Cross it over the center.
- Repeat down your head. Alternate sides, adding nearby loose hair to each outer section before crossing it over the center. Taking roughly comparable amounts from each side helps keep the braid visually balanced. Keep the braid close to your scalp and use steady, comfortable tension.
- Braid the remaining length. Once all loose hair has been incorporated, continue with a regular three-strand braid to the ends, then secure it with an elastic or hair tie.
Keeping the strands organized while you braid
Each time a section moves to the center, track where the other two sections are and keep them separate as your hands change position. Work slowly at first; the braid forms partly by touch, so it may feel awkward to coordinate the movements while looking in a mirror. A mirror can help you monitor placement, but clear sectioning and consistent hand movements matter more than watching every pass.
If the written sequence is hard to follow, a visual demonstration focused on hand position and adding hair can make the movements easier to see. EverydayHairInspiration describes a self-braiding tutorial that covers sectioning, hand position, and two ways of adding hair: watch the self-braiding demonstration.

French braid or Dutch braid?
This guide uses the French-braid crossing: each outer section passes over the center. In a Dutch braid, the outer sections pass under the center, which makes the braid look more raised. Choose the French method when you want the braid to lie closer across the scalp; do not switch crossing direction midway through the braid.

Common snags and how to adjust
- The braid looks uneven: Add roughly comparable amounts of loose hair from each side and check that each section stays distinct.
- You lose track of a strand: Pause, separate the three sections again, and resume with the same over-center crossing direction.
- The braid feels loose or slips: Keep the braid close to the scalp and use steady, comfortable tension. There is no need to pull uncomfortably tight.
- You are not sure when to stop adding hair: Stop once all loose hair along the scalp has been incorporated. Braid the remaining length normally.
