Anne Hathaway apologized to journalist Kjersti Flaa for a curt 2012 interview promoting Les Misérables, Flaa said after reposting the footage in 2024. Flaa described receiving a personal email through Hathaway’s publicist; Hathaway’s representative confirmed to Variety that she had responded. The email itself was not made public.
What happened in the Anne Hathaway interview?
The exchange took place during a filmed press junket for Les Misérables in 2012. Flaa’s questions drew on the musical’s songs and themes, and she invited the actors to sing their answers. Variety reported that Hugh Jackman and Eddie Redmayne agreed, while Hathaway declined.
When Flaa asked Hathaway to sing, Hathaway replied, “Well, I won’t be doing that, but you’re more than welcome to sing.” The footage also shows short answers to some questions, including “No.” The Independent reported that one question asked whether people had to sacrifice more for love in the story’s 19th-century setting than they do today.
What did Anne Hathaway apologize for?
Flaa said Hathaway sent a long email explaining what she was going through at the time of the interview and apologizing for the way she had handled it. Flaa described the apology this way: “She sent me a long email explaining to me what she was going through right then when she did this interview, and she apologized for being… giving me an awful interview, basically.”
Flaa called the message “a very personal note.” She said she and Hathaway agreed that she would not share the email’s exact contents. The details of Hathaway’s personal circumstances therefore remain private; the apology’s public account comes from Flaa, while Variety reported confirmation from Hathaway’s representative that she had responded.
Who was the journalist?
Kjersti Flaa is the journalist who conducted the 2012 interview. In 2024, she reposted the footage in a YouTube video titled “This might be my worst interview idea ever.” The apology became public after that video brought renewed attention to the exchange.
