There is no objectively established winner for “worst anime art style.” The label is subjective, and it often mixes up three different things: a design a viewer dislikes, animation that looks inconsistent in motion, and an adaptation that changes its source material. Berserk (2016) and Hand Shakers are examples discussed critically for their CG visuals, but they are candidates for debate—not a proven consensus ranking.
What “worst art style” can mean
Art style is the look of a work: its character and background designs, palette, composition, and visual choices. Animation quality is about how drawings or models move and hold together from shot to shot. Adaptation fidelity is a separate question: whether an anime preserves, simplifies, or reinterprets the look and conventions of its source.
Those categories overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A viewer may dislike a design that is deliberate and consistent; another may enjoy the designs but find the motion or rendering distracting. A production technique, including CGI, is not by itself proof of poor art.
How to compare a divisive visual style
- Design: Are characters and settings readable, and do they look intentionally unusual or uneven?
- Color and composition: Do palette, contrast, framing, and camera movement support the scene or compete with it?
- Animation execution: Are movement and drawings consistent? This is distinct from whether the underlying designs appeal to you.
- CGI integration: Do computer-generated elements sit comfortably alongside 2D art, or do their rendering and movement stand out?
- Adaptation choices: Is the anime copying a source’s visual conventions, translating them into motion, or departing from them?
- Viewer threshold: Which choices are distracting to you, rather than simply unfamiliar or unconventional?
Berserk (2016): a frequently criticized CG look
The 2016 television series is a defensible example in discussion of divisive CG visuals, but that does not establish it as the anime with the worst art style for viewers generally. The criticism is a judgment about the viewing experience, not a measurable category or audience-wide verdict.

It is also important not to merge this series with the earlier Berserk Golden Age Arc films. In a 2012 Q&A, producer Fuko Noda described the films’ hybrid technique: “You may have noticed that we used a special technique which we call hybrid, where the face is drawn and the body is CG, and this is pretty much the first time this has been done.” The same discussion records chief animation director and character designer Naoyuki Onda explaining that drawn faces compensated for the difficulty of creating facial expressions with CG. Noda said the approach was difficult and took repeated attempts. Those production comments concern the films, not the 2016 television series; they explain a specific technique but do not decide whether viewers find its results successful. Read the 2012 Q&A with the film’s production team.
Hand Shakers: another debated CG example
Hand Shakers also appears in commentary about anime whose CG visuals some viewers dislike. That makes it a useful example of the debate, not proof of a universal or majority opinion. When judging it, be specific: is the objection to the character designs, the color and composition, how the CG is integrated, or how scenes move? Calling all of those issues “bad animation” obscures what a viewer is actually responding to.

Why adaptation choices complicate the verdict
An anime does not have to reproduce a manga panel literally to be visually faithful to its spirit. The official JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure production notes describe decisions to adapt manga-specific poses, motion lines, dialogue, and color shifts for animation, including hand-recreating some effects. Such choices show why fidelity is a matter of translation and staging, not simply copying an image. A deliberate departure may work for one viewer and fail for another.
That distinction matters when calling a style “bad”: an adaptation can make purposeful visual choices and still be disliked, while an unusual look can be mistaken for a production flaw simply because it differs from what a viewer expects. The production notes describe the team’s intentions; they do not settle audience response. See the official JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure anime portal.

So which anime has the worst art style?
No poll, survey, or other statistic establishes a winner. If you want examples to examine, Berserk (2016) and Hand Shakers are both mentioned in critical discussion of CG visuals. Which one you consider worse depends on whether your main concern is design, composition, motion, CGI integration, or adaptation choices. Calling either one the definitive answer would turn an opinion into a fact the available evidence does not support.
