What is the highest-grossing anime movie? In reporting available for this article, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba—The Movie: Infinity Castle is the current leader cited, but its reported worldwide total varies by source and date. A complete, consistently scoped worldwide top-ten ranking cannot be verified from the available title-level figures, so presenting a definitive ordered list would be misleading. Data checked: October 8, 2026.
Why there is no defensible worldwide top ten here
A proper ranking needs one database, one retrieval date, and the same treatment of theatrical rereleases for every film. The figures available for this article do not provide a complete anime-only worldwide list under those consistent rules. The table below therefore identifies what can be established, rather than mixing figures with different geographies or measurement periods into a false ranking.

| Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba—The Movie: Infinity Castle | $738.5 million | GamesRadar+ reported this worldwide total after North American and UK rereleases in March 2026. It is an outlet-reported snapshot, not a value reconciled with every other published total. GamesRadar+ |
| Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba—The Movie: Infinity Castle | ¥68.0 billion equivalent | Nippon.com reported this worldwide take through September 15, 2025. It is an earlier snapshot in yen, not directly interchangeable with the later dollar report. Nippon.com |
| Your Name | $408,335,511 | Box Office Mojo’s title page lists an all-release worldwide total, with release-level rows separately itemized; accessed in 2026. Box Office Mojo |
The table is not a comparative ranking: it contains snapshots from different publishers and dates, and only one figure is a cited current leader. Box Office Mojo’s all-release total for Your Name also illustrates why rerelease treatment matters: its record separates the original release from later runs. A ranking must state whether it uses the overall title total or a particular release entry. Box Office Mojo
What the Japan ranking can—and cannot—tell you
TOHO’s May 2026 anime-film ranking, based on Kogyo Tsushinsha data, is a Japan domestic chart. It is a useful official cross-check for Japanese ticket revenue, but it is not a substitute for a worldwide ranking. TOHO reports the figures in yen, in units of ¥100 million. TOHO

| Rank in TOHO’s Japan domestic chart | Film | Japan gross reported in 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba—The Movie: Mugen Train | ¥40.75 billion |
| 2 | Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle | ¥40.21 billion |
| 3 | Spirited Away | ¥31.68 billion |
| 4 | Your Name | ¥25.17 billion |
| 5 | Princess Mononoke | ¥21.46 billion |
| 6 | One Piece Film: Red | ¥20.34 billion |
These values answer which anime films have earned the most at Japan’s domestic box office according to TOHO’s report—not which films have earned the most worldwide. TOHO’s separate worldwide animation table covers animated films broadly and does not establish an anime-only global order. TOHO
How to interpret a highest-grossing claim
Check the geography
“Worldwide,” “Japan domestic,” and “North America” describe different box-office markets. A North American chart cannot establish a worldwide leader; Box Office Mojo’s Anime genre page is a North American territory chart, while TOHO’s figures above are Japan-only. Box Office Mojo TOHO

Check what release history is included
A theatrical rerelease adds another run to a film’s history, but databases may itemize the run separately or include it in an all-release total. That can alter both the figure and a film’s position. A useful ranking labels its database, retrieval date, and rerelease convention; it does not quietly combine release-level data from one title with an all-release total from another. Box Office Mojo
Keep currency and date attached to the figure
Japan totals are reported in yen, while worldwide headlines often use dollars. A currency conversion depends on the conversion date and method, so retain the source’s published currency and date unless the conversion basis is explicitly stated. This is one reason ¥68.0 billion through September 15, 2025, and $738.5 million reported after 2026 rereleases should remain distinct source snapshots rather than be merged. Nippon.com GamesRadar+

Remember what gross measures
Box-office gross is ticket revenue before production, distribution, and exhibition costs. It does not show a film’s profit, how many tickets were sold, its quality, or audience preference.

Infinity Castle had a reported worldwide opening weekend of $177.8 million in September 2025, according to the Associated Press. Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian told AP, “This performance by this particular film shows the unpredictability of the box office.” That weekend figure is an opening-period result, not a lifetime gross. In a 2025 analysis, TheWrap quoted Dergarabedian saying, “I think it is safe to say that anime isn’t alternative content anymore. It is a growing part of a changing theatrical market.” The analysis also described the theatrical role of Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures, including Sony Pictures Releasing handling distribution outside Japan for Crunchyroll theatrical acquisitions. These observations help explain the market context, but they do not change the geographic or release-history requirements for a ranking. TheWrap
Quick Recap

How anime movies should be ranked by box-office gross
- Choose one title-level database. Use it for every film rather than combining a domestic chart, a territory page, and news snapshots.
- Set the scope to worldwide lifetime theatrical gross. Exclude Japan-only and North American-only figures from the global order.
- Apply one rerelease rule. Decide whether the ranking uses all theatrical releases or a specified release run, and apply that method consistently.
- Record the retrieval date and the database’s displayed currency. Keep source dates attached to volatile figures, especially when a rerelease is underway.
- Include only films whose comparable title-level data can be checked. If a full list cannot be verified, label the limitation rather than implying an exact top ten.
