What bad news did Amy Poehler get?
In a story Poehler shared at BookCon in 2014, she said she was heavily pregnant and due shortly after Hamm’s 2008 Saturday Night Live hosting week. While at work, she learned by phone that her OB-GYN had died the night before. She began sobbing while dressed for a Mad Men-themed sketch, according to the Los Angeles Times’ report of her account.

What did Jon Hamm say to make her laugh?
Hamm, who was preparing for his first week as an SNL host, put his hands on Poehler’s shoulders and told her: “This is a really important show for me. I’m gonna need you to get your [expletive] together.” The Los Angeles Times rendered the profanity as an expletive. Poehler said she laughed hard at the remark.
Why did Poehler say the joke helped?
In a Fresh Air interview republished by KPBS in October 2014, Poehler reflected on Hamm’s timing: “He read the room, he read me right, and it was exactly what I needed to hear.” She also described comedy as a way to be in a sad place and then be made to laugh. Her point was about this particular moment and Hamm’s response—not a general claim about grief or treatment.

In that interview, Poehler also joked, “I think going from laughing to crying to laughing to crying — making those quick turns adds years to your life.” It was a personal, humorous observation, not a medical finding.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Poehler shared the anecdote at BookCon while discussing her forthcoming memoir, Yes Please, which the article said was scheduled for release on October 28, 2014. A later conversation with Hamm on Poehler’s podcast revisited the story. A third-party transcript gives the sequence as a Friday night before a Saturday SNL show, with Poehler expecting to give birth on Sunday; those timing details belong to that transcript’s version of her recollection.
