Aly Raisman made her Sports Illustrated Swimsuit debut in 2017 and returned in 2018 for two distinct features: a swimwear photo shoot in Aruba and the portrait series “In Her Own Words.” The Aruba images were photographed by James Macari; Taylor Ballantyne photographed the New York City feature.
Raisman’s 2018 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit features
The two features present different sides of the 2018 appearance. The Aruba gallery is a location-based swimwear shoot. “In Her Own Words” is a separate photo feature, photographed in New York City; a 2023 Sports Illustrated retrospective describes its setting as a Brooklyn studio. The gallery itself is a set of photographs, not a published interview transcript.
| Feature | Setting | Photographer | Presentation |

Aly Raisman 2018: Aruba
The official Sports Illustrated gallery identifies the Aruba images as part of the 2018 Swimsuit Issue and credits James Macari as photographer. Its captions name swimwear from Aerie, Kopper and Zink, I.D. Sarrieri, INDAH Clothing and Mikoh. Individual images also credit a Divamp Couture top or a Manuel Albarran belt.
Those are credits attached to particular images, not confirmation that the same garments remain available today. View the official Aruba gallery.

Aly Raisman 2018: “In Her Own Words”

What Raisman said about the experience
In a 2024 retrospective, Sports Illustrated quoted Raisman saying, “Being able to shoot SI Swim, it’s such a big honor,” and, “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do.” The remarks convey how she viewed the opportunity, distinct from the message about self-expression she shared during the 2018 shoot. In February 2018, TIME reported on a message Raisman shared with an image from the shoot. She wrote, “Women do not need to be modest to be respected—Live for you!” and said, “Everyone should feel comfortable expressing themselves however makes them happy.” Her post linked personal expression with confidence and the principle that a woman’s clothing does not determine whether she deserves respect. Raisman debuted in the Swimsuit Issue in 2017, then returned the following year for the two separate features. The 2018 images and her accompanying message became a visible part of her public story beyond gymnastics. SI’s retrospective notes that she retired from gymnastics in January 2020 and identifies her 2017 memoir as Fierce: How Competing for Myself Changed Everything; neither fact changes the distinction between the two 2018 shoots.
