There is no definitive 25-song AC/DC canon. This selection is a guided starting point: it balances familiar anthems, album landmarks, musical character, cultural presence where supportable, and songs from across the band’s catalog. AC/DC formed in Sydney in 1973, and their first main lineup included brothers Malcolm and Angus Young and singer Bon Scott; their debut album, High Voltage, followed in 1975, according to Official Charts.

25 essential AC/DC songs, by listening path

Release context matters with AC/DC: some songs have different versions or track-list placements across territories, live albums, soundtracks, and compilations. The album associations below follow the band’s official music archive; where the album itself is a different release context, that is identified.

Early Australian material and international breakthrough

  1. “It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ’n’ Roll” — T.N.T. (Australian release). Bagpipes cut through the guitar attack, making this an unmistakable early statement about the band’s rough-edged rock identity.
  2. “T.N.T.” — T.N.T. (Australian release); also on the international High Voltage. Its chant-ready chorus is an ideal introduction to AC/DC’s direct, crowd-facing songwriting.
  3. “High Voltage” — T.N.T. (Australian release); also on the international High Voltage. A compact mission statement built on a riff and a title that became synonymous with the group.
  4. “Live Wire” — High Voltage (international release). This longer, more gradual build shows that early AC/DC could stretch a song out before snapping into its full charge.
  5. “Jailbreak” — Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (Australian release). A story song with a strong sense of momentum; the original Australian album version and later release contexts should not be confused.

The Bon Scott studio years

  1. “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap” — Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. The title track is an especially vivid example of the sly, theatrical edge Bon Scott brought to the band’s hard-rock sound.
  2. “Problem Child” — Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. Its stop-start feel and swagger make it a useful counterpoint to the album’s more famous title track.
  3. “Let There Be Rock” — Let There Be Rock. One of the band’s defining extended performances, it gives the guitars room to build and intensify rather than relying only on a short, punchy arrangement.
  4. “Whole Lotta Rosie” — Let There Be Rock. A charging riff and an outsized character-driven lyric make it a natural centerpiece of the Bon Scott era.
  5. “Rocker” — Let There Be Rock. Brief and fast-moving, it captures the band’s stripped-down, live-wire side in miniature.
  6. “Rock ’n’ Roll Damnation” — Powerage. A looser groove and a more relaxed vocal delivery broaden the picture of what AC/DC could do without leaving its core sound.
  7. “Riff Raff” — Powerage. Its restless guitar figure and shifting intensity make it one of the album’s most distinctive deep cuts.
  8. “Sin City” — Powerage. The song’s measured opening and darker atmosphere offer a different kind of tension from the band’s more overtly celebratory rockers.
  9. “Highway to Hell” — Highway to Hell. A signature title track with an instantly recognizable riff and chorus. The band’s official album page describes Robert “Mutt” Lange as a new producer brought in to shape tighter songs and more forceful choruses, and identifies this song among the record’s defining tracks.
  10. “Girls Got Rhythm” — Highway to Hell. A brisk, bright rocker that shows the album’s knack for compact arrangements and memorable hooks.
  11. “If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It)” — Highway to Hell. Another of the album’s standout tracks, driven by an insistent rhythm and a chorus designed to land hard.

The Back in Black transition

  1. “Hells Bells” — Back in Black. Its tolling bell and patient buildup announce the sound of the band’s new chapter with Brian Johnson, without abandoning the group’s familiar guitar-driven force.
  2. “Shoot to Thrill” — Back in Black. A dynamic opener that moves from a measured introduction into a full-band charge.
  3. “Back in Black” — Back in Black. The title track’s spare, instantly identifiable riff makes it one of the clearest entry points for listeners who know the band only by reputation.
  4. “You Shook Me All Night Long” — Back in Black. A melodic, tightly arranged hit that demonstrates how much room AC/DC’s sound has for a strong vocal hook.

Later studio landmarks

  1. “For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)” — For Those About to Rock We Salute You. The album-ending salute builds toward its signature cannon effects, turning the band’s audience connection into part of the song’s design.
  2. “Thunderstruck” — The Razors Edge. The opening guitar pattern is the centerpiece of a song that turns repetition into suspense and release.
  3. “Moneytalks” — The Razors Edge. A bright, quick-moving track that balances the album’s heavier material with a more immediate, singable chorus.
  4. “Rock or Bust” — Rock or Bust. The title track is a concise later-era example of the band’s commitment to riff-first songwriting.
  5. “Realize” — Power Up. A representative pick from the band’s 2020 studio album, keeping the focus on a direct vocal-and-guitar attack in a later catalog chapter.

How to use this list

For the shortest route into the catalog, start with “T.N.T.,” “Highway to Hell,” “Back in Black,” and “Thunderstruck,” then move to “Riff Raff,” “Hells Bells,” and “Realize” to hear how the group’s sound spans distinct album eras. To follow the Bon Scott-to-Brian Johnson transition, listen to Highway to Hell followed by Back in Black in album order.

Streaming playlists are another practical route: Apple Music’s AC/DC artist page features AC/DC Essentials, AC/DC: Deep Cuts, and a Power Up Tour Set List, as well as an Essential Albums section. These editorial collections can help you explore, but they are not an authoritative or definitive canon.

Where to go after the 25 songs

The official AC/DC archive separates studio albums from live recordings, soundtrack appearances, and compilations, so use it to locate a particular recording rather than assuming every release with a familiar title contains the same version. For rarities and live material, the official Backtracks page describes a collection of tracks that includes songs from early Australian album versions and early single B-sides. It is a deeper-listening option, not a substitute for the core studio-album path.
