Richard Goodall did not leave his school janitor job immediately after winning America’s Got Talent in September 2024. He continued working while pursuing singing opportunities. A 2026 TV Insider update reports that he retired from the job at the end of that school year.
Is Richard Goodall still a janitor?
According to TV Insider’s 2026 update, Goodall retired from his position at West Vigo Middle School at the end of the 2026 school year. That report is the available account of the retirement timing; it does not cite a direct statement from Goodall or the school confirming the exact date.

The original “isn’t quitting” description reflected what Goodall said after his 2024 win: he stayed at the school while taking on singing opportunities, rather than immediately walking away from his day job.

His work history was not a brief pre-television stint. In an October 2024 interview with NEA Today, Goodall said, “I’ve been a janitor for 23 years and on Veterans Day, I would sing ‘God Bless the USA.’” The interview also describes how a video of him singing “Don’t Stop Believin’” at school brought his performance to AGT’s attention.
Two months after the finale, Goodall told NBC Insider, in remarks quoted by TV Insider: “I’m doing singing things, but I’m still at the school. I’m still a janitor.” He also said, “I’ll continue to work at the school until, you know, I can’t anymore.” Those comments explain why he kept the job after the win; they describe his plans in 2024, not his later reported retirement.
