What the book is about
Rajasekaran’s book is nonfiction centred on young Indian women from diverse backgrounds and the everyday ways they navigate patriarchy. In a January 2022 interview with DESIblitz, Rajasekaran said she had interviewed hundreds of Indian women and researched queer studies, feminism, gender and sexuality, and women’s history while developing it.
The interview describes a wide thematic range, including beauty and body politics, sexuality, caste, power, partnerships, work, femininity, honour and choice. Rajasekaran said, “I spoke to knowledge experts from various fields to feminise every canon.”
Why the excerpt resists a single definition of feminism
The Scroll excerpt challenges the idea that women form a uniform group whose decisions can be ranked against one universal feminist standard. Rajasekaran put the point this way in the interview: “The lesson I learned is not to pigeonhole every woman as ‘modern’ or ‘traditional,’ ‘feminist’ or ‘unfeminist’ because each woman is unique and her choices are strategic.” This is an argument for taking agency seriously without pretending that every woman has the same options or faces the same pressures.
The tensions the excerpt brings into view
The excerpt’s examples situate feminist disagreements amid overlapping questions of caste, religion, class, sexuality, political commitments and the relationship between tradition and modernity. - Social position: Caste and class shape the conditions in which women encounter power and the kinds of solidarity that may be possible.
- Belief and politics: Religious and political commitments can influence how women understand gender justice and what strategies they consider viable.
- Feminist approaches: Liberal, Marxist, secular and other approaches may frame agency, institutions and social change differently; the excerpt does not present these as a complete or fixed taxonomy.
- Choice and solidarity: Respecting a woman’s decisions does not remove questions about unequal constraints, exclusion or whose concerns a movement treats as central.
On “Demystifying the Feminine,” Rajasekaran said it “examines how women across the socio-cultural spectrum define and express femininity.” She also described her broader aim: “I want to look at Indian communities and see the barriers Indian women face and how they overcome them.”
