On Thanksgiving Day 2009, Paul Merhige shot relatives at a family gathering in Jupiter, Florida, killing four people and wounding others. His guilty plea and life sentences ended the criminal case without a trial, but left some relatives angry at the outcome. A separate lawsuit against Merhige’s parents raised a narrower question: whether they could legally be held responsible for failing to control their adult son.
What happened at the Thanksgiving gathering?
On November 26, 2009, relatives gathered at the Jupiter home of Jim and Muriel Sitton. Their cousin Paul Merhige opened fire. Four people were killed: his twin sisters, Carla Merhige and Lisa Knight; his aunt, Raymonde Joseph; and six-year-old Makayla Sitton, the Sittons’ daughter. Others were wounded.
Gizmodo’s later account quoted Jim Sitton recalling Merhige say, “I have been waiting 20 years to do this.” That is a recollection reported by the article, not a statement independently established here through a recording or transcript.
How did the criminal case end?
Merhige fled and was arrested in January 2010 after weeks on the run. On October 27, 2011, he pleaded guilty under an agreement that spared him the death penalty. He received seven consecutive life sentences, according to CBS Miami’s sentencing report.

Circuit Judge Joseph Marx told Merhige, “You will never see the light of day,” CBS Miami reported. The agreement resolved the criminal charges through a plea rather than a jury trial.
Why did relatives disagree about the plea?
Jim and Muriel Sitton wanted the case to go to trial and objected to the agreement. For them, a negotiated sentence was not the outcome they sought after their daughter’s killing. Other surviving relatives had different priorities, as contemporaneous reporting described; the family was not of one mind about how the case should end.

The disagreement was about the criminal resolution, not whether Merhige had committed the shootings: he pleaded guilty. The plea avoided a trial and the possibility of a death sentence, while imposing seven consecutive life terms.
What happened to the lawsuits against Merhige’s parents?
Victims’ representatives brought negligence claims against Merhige’s parents, arguing they should be held responsible in connection with their adult son’s actions. On February 19, 2014, Florida’s Fourth District Court of Appeal affirmed dismissal of the claims in Knight v. Merhige, 133 So. 3d 1140 (Fla. 4th DCA 2014).

The court concluded that the parents owed no legal duty to control their adult son under the circumstances alleged. That was a decision about whether the negligence claims were legally sufficient. It was not a jury finding that the parents knew nothing, a declaration about moral responsibility, or a ruling on the family’s grief. The appellate opinion is available from the Florida Fourth District Court of Appeal.

In a 2011 report, CBS Miami described the Sittons continuing to grieve Makayla while also preparing for a new baby. The account captures the coexistence of loss and a new pregnancy, not a neat resolution to the family’s pain. Later coverage described a divided aftermath shaped by bereavement, the plea disagreement, and the unsuccessful civil claims.
