The two-year period referred to the couple’s separation, which was the basis for the decree nisi pronounced in May. The reported total combined a £16.5 million lump sum with £7.8 million in assets.
How much did Heather Mills receive?
Contemporary reporting by The Guardian put Mills’s total assets following the ruling at £24.3 million. That figure was not all cash: it comprised a £16.5 million lump sum and £7.8 million in assets, including properties.

The reported lump sum included £14 million for income needs, assessed in the report at £600,000 a year, and £2.5 million to purchase a London property. Those components add up to the reported £16.5 million lump sum; they should not be added again to the £24.3 million total.
Child-related provisions were reported separately. McCartney was to pay Beatrice’s nanny and school fees, as well as £35,000 a year directly for her. These payments were not described as part of Mills’s £24.3 million in assets.

How did the award compare with the amounts sought and offered?
The Guardian’s account of the judgment said Mills had sought £125 million and McCartney had offered £15.8 million. Those were the reported positions of the parties, not the court’s award. They are also different measures from the £16.5 million lump sum and £24.3 million total assets reported after the ruling.
| Figure | What it represents |
|---|---|
| £125 million | Amount Mills was reported to have sought, according to The Guardian’s 2008 report of the judgment. |
| £15.8 million | Amount McCartney was reported to have offered, according to the same report. |
| £16.5 million | Reported lump-sum award. |
| £24.3 million | Reported total of the lump sum plus Mills’s assets, including properties. |
Why did McCartney pay Mills millions?
The High Court Family Division decided the financial-provision dispute in McCartney v McCartney, [2008] EWHC 401 (Fam), before Mr Justice Bennett. The ruling followed the court’s consideration of the parties’ financial claims and needs. The reported breakdown identifies income needs and a London property purchase as parts of the lump sum; it does not make the whole £24.3 million a cash payment.

- Ram is the only album credited to the couple Paul and Linda McCartney
Mills described the result as securing her and Beatrice’s future. Speaking outside the High Court on 17 March 2008, she said, “I’m so glad it’s over,” and called it “an incredible result in the end to secure mine and Beatrice’s future and all the charities I plan on helping.” That was Mills’s reaction, not the court’s characterization of its decision.
Did their divorce take two years?
No: the financial hearing itself ran from 11 to 18 February 2008, and judgment was dated 17 March. The two years referred to the period of separation. On 12 May 2008, the High Court pronounced a decree nisi on the basis that the couple had been separated for two years, as reported by The Irish Times. The financial ruling and the later decree nisi were separate milestones.

What Mills said about representing yourself
In a separate statement published by The Guardian, Mills advised people in difficult disputes that they could act as litigants in person and said they should “save yourselves a fortune.” This was advice she gave at the time, not general legal guidance; her remarks do not establish what would be appropriate in another person’s case. The statement is available in The Guardian’s report.
