Where does the downtown parade go?
In 2026, the parade ran on Columbus Drive between Balbo Drive and Monroe Street, beginning at noon. What are the neighborhood alternatives?
If you would rather make the day less centered on downtown, Choose Chicago lists the South Side Irish Parade in Beverly, the Northwest Side Irish Parade in Norwood Park, events at the Irish American Heritage Center, and Shamrock’n the Block at Old St. Patrick’s Church. These offer different neighborhood settings, but dates, routes, and event details need a current-year check.
For 2026, Choose Chicago described the South Side parade as family-friendly and said it moved south on Western Avenue between 103rd and 115th Streets. Treat that route and characterization as 2026 information, not a guarantee for a future edition. Why does Chicago dye the river green?
Choose Chicago dates the city’s Irish parade tradition to 1843 and the river dyeing to 1962. UA Local 130 says its members dye the river and identifies the union as the parade’s title sponsor.
