A. Kanyakumari’s influence reaches well beyond her own concert career: Scroll describes three generations of violinists from the Kanya school performing on Carnatic stages around the world. That phrase describes a musical lineage, not an audited student count. The roots of that lineage lie in her own training, her long mentorship with vocalist M. L. Vasanthakumari, and a teaching approach built around listening, singing and individual expression.
How did Kanyakumari’s own musical training take shape?
Kanyakumari’s musical roots are in Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh. She began studying violin with Ivaturi Vijayeshwara Rao, who was associated with the Dwaram school. She later studied music at Queen Mary’s College in Chennai and further developed her violin playing under M. Chandrasekaran, according to Scroll’s 2023 profile.
A formative relationship began in 1971, when she filled in for the regular violinist at one of M. L. Vasanthakumari’s wedding concerts. Kanyakumari recalled that their association continued until the vocalist’s death in 1990. “She was my mother, guru, and mentor,” she said, crediting Vasanthakumari with teaching, encouraging and advocating for her. The bond was both personal and professional: Vasanthakumari supported her as an accompanist in a concert world where women musicians faced barriers, including a dispute around All India Radio grading.
That lineage also shaped a notable milestone. Music writer S. Gopalakrishnan told Scroll that Kanyakumari was the first woman violinist to receive the Madras Music Academy’s Sangeeta Kalanidhi honour, in 2016. It was a distinction within that award’s history, not a claim about every Carnatic music honour.

What does “three generations” of the Kanya school mean?
Scroll uses “Kanya school” to describe a performing and teaching lineage associated with Kanyakumari; IIIT Hyderabad calls her style the “Kanya baani.” The available profiles do not establish a formally codified institution or provide a complete student roster. “Three generations” is best understood as the reported reach of that lineage on Carnatic stages, rather than a precise census of students or a claim that every student is a professional violinist.
Kanyakumari gave Scroll her own estimate of the school’s reach: “Oh, more than a 100,” referring to graduates over nearly three decades. That is her reported estimate, not an independently audited total. A separate snapshot comes from her student Sayee Rakshith, who said that 25 of the 60 concerts at Chennai’s Music Academy during the 2022–23 season featured Kanyakumari’s students. That count concerns one student’s observation of one venue in one season, not a measure of the entire lineage.
How does Kanyakumari teach violin?
Students describe lessons as led by the ear and voice. Rather than routinely demonstrating on the violin, Kanyakumari sings while students play and listen for the musical shape. Rakshith summed it up: “Our classes are her singing and us playing by ear.” The approach makes listening an active part of technique: a student has to hear a phrase, find it on the instrument and refine it in response to the sung model.
Scroll’s profile also emphasizes that Kanyakumari recognizes how students’ bodies and ways of playing differ. Her teaching does not prescribe one physical route to the music. The expectation is demanding—an expressive, vocal quality and a willingness to explore—but students can develop individual approaches to the instrument rather than imitate a single posture or gesture.

How does her teaching connect to her performance innovations?
The same combination of disciplined listening and openness to difference appears in Kanyakumari’s ensemble experiments. In Tristhayi Sangamam, three violins play simultaneously in three different octaves. Scroll describes a concert with Kanyakumari and senior students Embar Kannan and Vittal Rangan using this arrangement. Hearing the same musical material across registers makes the relationship between individual lines and the shared composition especially clear.
Another format, Vadyalahari, combines violin, veena and nadaswaram, according to IIIT Hyderabad’s November 2023 concert profile. Scroll also reports experiments involving 27-violin ensembles and new ragas. IIIT Hyderabad says Kanyakumari created seven ragas named after the seven hills of Tirumala. These profiles identify examples of her experimentation; they do not provide a full catalogue or account of each work’s history.

IIIT Hyderabad described Kanyakumari as a classical violinist who had performed around the world for more than six decades as of November 2023. Her honours include the Padma Shri in 2015 and the Madras Music Academy’s Sangeetha Kalanidhi in 2016, dates also given in CMANA’s biography. Sangeetha Kalanidhi is distinct from the Sangeet Natak Akademi award, which IIIT Hyderabad lists separately among her honours.

Kanyakumari’s story connects inheritance with experimentation. Her playing grew through teachers and a sustained mentorship; her own students, in turn, are described as carrying a shared musical lineage onto concert stages while learning through listening and developing individual expression. The three-generation account is not a headcount. It is a description of how a way of hearing and playing Carnatic music can travel from teacher to student, and from the classroom into performance.
