At the 81st Golden Globe Awards on January 7, 2024, Ali Wong and Steven Yeun each won a lead acting award for Beef. Their paired wins were described by contemporaneous reporting as a first for Asian performers in the Golden Globes’ lead limited-series acting categories—not as the first Asian performers to win any Golden Globe acting award.
What Ali Wong and Steven Yeun won
Wong received Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a Motion Picture Made for Television. Yeun won the corresponding male-actor award. Both awards recognized their performances in Beef, the Netflix series.

The official Golden Globes record for Beef lists three nominations and three wins in 2024. In addition to Wong’s and Yeun’s acting awards, the series won Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television. The official Steven Yeun record and the Globes’ Ali Wong award gallery document their individual wins.
What history did the paired wins make?
The Associated Press described Wong and Yeun as the first Asian performers to win the best actress and best actor awards in a limited series. That is a claim about these lead acting categories, not every acting category at the Golden Globes. The awards database confirms the 2024 winners and category names; the historical “first” characterization comes from reporting, rather than from a demographic analysis in the official database.

The distinction matters because the record is sometimes summarized too broadly. Axios reported that its story was updated after the Golden Globes corrected who was first to win in the Limited TV Series category. The careful formulation is that Wong and Yeun were reported as the first Asian performers to win the lead female- and male-actor awards in the limited-series category. See the Associated Press ceremony coverage and Axios’s report and correction note.

Korea.net separately reported that Yeun was the first person of Korean descent to win the Golden Globe for best actor. That is a distinct, narrower identity-based formulation, and it should not be confused with a claim about nationality. Korea.net describes Yeun as Korean American; its report is available at “Steven Yeun is first Korean to win Golden Globe for best actor”.
