Alec Guinness’s exact net worth is not established by the available reporting. The clearest specific figure is a 2002 report that he left an estate worth more than £2.5 million; a separate 2000 report repeated a much larger, disputed claim about his fortune. Those figures describe different things and should not be treated as interchangeable.
What was Alec Guinness’s net worth?
No reliable, complete calculation of Guinness’s lifetime net worth is established by the cited reports. The Farnham Herald reported in 2002 that his estate was worth more than £2.5 million. An estate value at death is not the same as a lifetime net-worth calculation: the reporting does not provide a full accounting of assets and liabilities or a valuation method.
The Guardian reported in 2000 that Guinness was reputed to have made up to £120 million from his share of Star Wars. The report also attributed this response to Guinness: “Divide that by 20 and you might be nearer the mark”. The claim was presented as reputed, not verified. It is not a sound basis for stating that his net worth was £120 million.
What do the reported figures mean?
| Figure | What the source said | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| More than £2.5 million | The Farnham Herald reported this as the value of the estate Guinness left in 2002. | A reported posthumous estate value, not a verified calculation of total lifetime wealth. |
| £2 million | The Farnham Herald’s 2002 estimate of Guinness’s Star Wars royalties. | A newspaper estimate, not an audited payment total. |
| Up to £120 million | The Guardian reported in 2000 that Guinness was reputed to have made this much from his two per cent stake. | A disputed, reputed fortune claim—not an established net-worth figure. |
| Two per cent | The Guardian’s 2000 obituary said Guinness’s contract guaranteed him two per cent of the film’s profit. | A reported contract term; it does not by itself establish the amount ultimately paid. |
These are historical nominal pound figures reported in different years. The reports do not supply a shared valuation date, a common calculation method, or a full accounting that would make the figures directly comparable. They should not be added together or converted into a current value without a supported method.

How much did Alec Guinness make from Star Wars?
Tom Sutcliffe’s Guardian obituary reported that Guinness’s contract guaranteed him two per cent of the film’s profit. The Farnham Herald later estimated his Star Wars royalties at £2 million. The Guardian’s separate report discussed a reputed figure as high as £120 million, while recording Guinness’s skeptical reply. The sources therefore establish the reported profit-share term and differing claims about its financial result, but not a definitive total for what he received.
The income mattered to his career choices. Sutcliffe’s obituary said the financial security from Star Wars made Guinness more selective about taking live stage roles.

Why the figures are so different
They refer to different measures: an estate reported after Guinness’s death, a newspaper estimate of royalties, and a much larger reputed fortune claim. The historical reports do not document a complete balance sheet or verify the largest figure. Guinness’s own reported response further cautions against presenting the £120 million claim as fact.
Guinness was an English actor with a career across stage, film, and television. Although audiences later widely recognized him as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the 1977 Star Wars, that role-related financial story is only one part of a long career; it does not, by itself, establish his total wealth.
