Adventure World’s fibreglass castle in Bibra Lake, Perth, caught fire late on 2 November 2013, after the park’s Fright Night event. Early reports said the cause was uncertain; PerthNow later reported that Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) investigators attributed the blaze to fireworks used that evening. The castle was eventually demolished, despite an earlier plan to restore it.
When did the fire happen?
Adventure World held its second Fright Night Halloween event on the evening of 2 November 2013. Fire crews were called after the fibreglass castle caught fire. Contemporary reports said there were no guests in the park at the time. PerthNow reported that about 20 firefighters responded to the blaze. PerthNow’s report described the castle and park as 31 years old at the time—a historical reference, not a statement of their current age.
What caused the Adventure World castle fire?
The first reports did not establish a cause. On 3 November, The West Australian quoted Adventure World CEO Mark Shaw saying: “We did have fireworks earlier in the evening but it was one hour and a half before the fire; it is too early to say what caused it.” The West Australian’s initial coverage reflected that uncertainty.
PerthNow reported on 3 November that DFES investigators had attributed the fire to fireworks lit for the second Fright Night event. That is the cause reported by the news outlet through a DFES spokesperson; the available coverage does not include the underlying investigation report or a direct statement from an investigator. PerthNow also reported that the park’s final Fright Night event would go ahead without fireworks.

How badly was the castle damaged?
PerthNow reported a contemporaneous damage estimate of $500,000, attributed to a DFES spokesman. The castle was significantly damaged but still standing in the early coverage. In 2016, The West Australian reported a later estimate of $500,000 to $1 million. These are estimates published at different times, not a confirmed final valuation. The West Australian’s 2016 report described the higher range in the context of the park’s lawsuit.
Why was the castle demolished after a restoration plan?
In January 2014, the trade publication Park World reported that Adventure World intended to restore the castle during the winter off-season. That was a plan, not a report that the work had been completed. In August 2014, PerthNow reported that the park had instead decided to demolish it because of the extensive fire damage. The later report resolves the castle’s fate: it was demolished.

Did Adventure World sue the fireworks company?
PerthNow and The West Australian reported on 5 August 2016 that Adventure World had sued Cardile International Fireworks. Their coverage described allegations in the filed writ, including negligence and breaches of contract or statutory duties; those were claims made by the park, not adjudicated findings.
