AJ Lee’s Black Widow stands out because it turns a submission into a vivid story: Lee described it as trapping an opponent like a spider in a web. WWE lists the Black Widow among her signature moves, alongside the Shining Wizard. There is no established canonical list of nine more “best” women’s wrestling submission finishers, so this article compares documented examples rather than presenting an official ranking.
Why AJ Lee’s Black Widow is memorable
WWE’s AJ Lee profile lists the Black Widow and the Shining Wizard as her signature moves. It also describes her style as high-flying and records three Divas Championship reigns. WWE says one of those reigns lasted 295 days, a record-setting run in the profile’s context.
The move’s identity comes not only from its name but from the image and story Lee attached to it. In comments attributed to an interview with WWE.com and reproduced by TPWW on May 16, 2013, Lee said: “I’ve had it in my back pocket for a while. I’m not the strongest person, so anything that lets me trap myself on an opponent, like a spider in a web, is effective.” Her description also emphasized the opponent’s abdomen, neck, and extended arms. The image of a trap gives viewers a clear narrative to follow as the hold is applied; it is not medical guidance about the move.
How to compare submission finishers
“Best” is a matter of judgment, not an established ranking. For the comparisons below, the useful questions are who is associated with a move, whether its setup and finish are visually legible, how much room the sequence gives opponents to struggle or counter, and how well it serves the match’s story. These are editorial criteria, not measured or officially ranked qualities.

Documented women’s wrestling submission finishers
AJ Lee’s Black Widow
Association: AJ Lee; WWE lists it as one of her signature moves. Visual identity: Lee’s spider-and-web explanation gives the hold a distinctive trap narrative. Match-story potential: The concept naturally emphasizes an opponent caught in Lee’s control, making resistance and escape central to the sequence. WWE’s profile does not provide a move-by-move breakdown.
Becky Lynch’s Dis-arm-her
Association: Becky Lynch; WWE’s profile lists the Dis-arm-her as a signature move. That official association makes it a clear comparison with Lee’s Black Widow. The profile does not establish a ranking or offer enough detail to assess its mechanics or counter opportunities.

The Sharpshooter
Association: WWE connects the Sharpshooter with Bret Hart, Natalya, and the Hart family in its feature on the move. WWE describes its crossed-leg setup and frames the maneuver as risky. That family association and recognizable setup give the hold a distinct identity in a match; the risk description is WWE’s framing, not independent medical advice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this is not a definitive top ten
The available official material supports these examples, but it does not identify which nine additional moves the original title might have intended, or supply a canonical ranking of women’s wrestling submissions. Fan prompts asking for favorite or “Mount Rushmore” selections are individual opinions, not representative polling. A longer list presented as definitive would therefore suggest evidence that does not exist. The three documented examples above offer a grounded comparison without pretending there is a settled order.
