Society Girl: A Tale of Sex, Lies, and Scandal, by Saba Imtiaz and Tooba Masood-Khan, revisits the 1970 death of Pakistani poet Mustafa Zaidi and the public scandal surrounding Shahnaz Gul. Its official description presents the case as unresolved—not as a mystery the book definitively solves.
What does the book investigate?
Zaidi was found dead in his bedroom in Karachi on an October morning in 1970. Shahnaz Gul was unconscious in a nearby room. The discovery drew intense press attention and made Gul the focus of a scandal that outlasted the initial investigation.
The publisher’s description says two autopsies, several investigations, and one trial did not answer what happened in the bedroom or how Zaidi died. That is the book’s stated framing; it is not a finding independently established here from case files. The description’s question—what happened and how Zaidi ended up dead—remains open in the available sources.
Does Society Girl establish how Zaidi died?
No. Roli Books describes the circumstances as unresolved after the investigations and trial. The sources available for this article do not include the underlying autopsy reports, police files, or court judgment, so they do not support declaring Zaidi’s death a murder, suicide, or any other definitive manner of death.

The book’s companion podcast, Notes on a Scandal, lists episodes on the initial police investigation, Zaidi’s exhumation and second medical examination, forensic questions, court proceedings, and the 1972 verdict in the State vs Shahnaz Gul case. Those episode subjects show the ground the series covers; an episode listing is not proof of a theory or a substitute for the original records.
Who was Mustafa Zaidi beyond the scandal?
The scandal is only one part of Zaidi’s story. A November 2024 excerpt from Society Girl published by Scroll.in describes his early career in Allahabad and move to Pakistan in 1951. According to that excerpt, his first poetry collection, Zanjeerein, appeared in 1947 with a preface by Firaq Gorakhpuri, followed by Roshni in 1949. The excerpt also says Zaidi had attempted suicide before his death; that biographical detail should not be mistaken for proof of how he died in 1970.
