Sarojesh Mukherjee’s biography, The Life and Times of David Hare: First Secular Educationist of India, explores that work through Hare’s involvement with the Calcutta School Society and schools across the city.
Who was David Hare?
David Hare was a Scottish watchmaker who became an educationist in Calcutta. His significance lies less in a single institution than in the work of organizing and supporting schools. The David Hare Foundation’s account also emphasizes his institutional legacy, while Mukherjee’s biography excerpt offers a more detailed narrative of his school work. David Hare Foundation
Hare’s work unfolded amid a wider colonial-era effort to establish new forms of education. Hindu College, founded in 1817, was part of that context: Cambridge University Press describes it as a sustained Western-style liberal-arts venture, separate from church and state. That setting should not obscure the different focus of the biography’s account of Hare: he was involved in schooling at multiple levels, including Bengali-medium institutions, and should not be described as Hindu College’s sole founder. How did Hare organize schools in Calcutta?
Mukherjee’s excerpt traces the Calcutta School Society to a Town Hall meeting on September 1, 1818. Its founding objective, as reproduced in the excerpt, was “to assist and improve existing schools and support any further schools and seminaries which may be requisite, with a view to the more general diffusion of useful knowledge”. Hare became Secretary of the Society’s Indigenous Department in 1821 and later its European Secretary. Scroll’s excerpt from Mukherjee’s biography

The excerpt links Hare to several schools in central Calcutta. It says he took charge of the Bengali-medium Arpuli Pathshala in 1818, became associated with an English school near Thanthania in 1823, and established or managed schools at Simla and Pataldanga. The Thanthania and Arpuli schools later had English and Bengali divisions, according to the excerpt. These details are biographical claims from the excerpt, not a complete institutional record.
What changed for pupils?
Lowering the cost of attendance
The biography excerpt describes practical support for access: some pupils received free schooling, books, or stationery; Hare paid certain school expenses himself; and poor pupils could, in some cases, receive money to encourage attendance. These arrangements varied, so they should not be read as a uniform policy applying to every pupil or school. The excerpt also reports that Hare gave Rs 6,000 to the Calcutta School Society in 1828 to clear its debts; that amount is reported by the biographer and is not independently confirmed here.

Teaching through Bengali as well as English
Hare’s approach was not simply a choice between English and Bengali. Mukherjee’s account says Hare supported modern European knowledge while also promoting Bengali literacy and instruction through Bengali. It describes Bengali knowledge as a requirement for pupils entering the Society’s English school and identifies Bengali-medium schools and textbooks as part of the educational work. The texts covered language, arithmetic, geography, and history.
This combination matters: English instruction could open access to European learning, while Bengali teaching and books made a broader range of subjects available in a language pupils knew. The excerpt describes educational methods and institutional efforts, but does not establish their overall reach or measure their long-term outcomes.

How should Hare School’s history be understood?
The institution’s lineage and its later name are distinct milestones. The official Hare School history gives 1818 as its establishment date and says it has borne the name Hare School since 1867. Mukherjee’s excerpt, meanwhile, describes an earlier sequence in which Arpuli and Pataldanga merged in 1834 to form Colootolla Branch School, later named Hare School after Hare’s death. These accounts give different kinds of historical detail; the official school page is the source for the establishment and naming dates. Hare School history, West Bengal school education portal

The biography presents Hare not only as a supporter of educational ideals but as an organizer involved in the day-to-day work of schooling: maintaining institutions, helping meet costs, and supporting Bengali-language learning. Its account is most useful when read with careful attribution. Specific stories, figures, and school chronology in Scroll’s excerpt belong to Mukherjee’s narrative; the school’s official history separately confirms the 1818 establishment date and the adoption of the Hare School name in 1867.
