A fan theory says Tom Cruise and Leonardo DiCaprio may have been too comparable in star power to share a film comfortably, with billing or competition for prominent roles getting in the way. That is speculation, not a confirmed explanation: the available coverage does not establish a feud, a deliberate avoidance, or a public explanation from either actor.
What is the rumoured theory?
The theory is that two actors of similarly high stature could compete for leading roles, screen prominence, or billing, making a joint project harder to arrange. Startefacts raises status and possible contract details such as billing as possible complications, while FandomWire traces the more dramatic “two apex predators” framing to fan discussion on Quora. Neither account presents evidence that the actors actually fought over roles or contract terms.
That distinction matters: a plausible-sounding industry explanation is not evidence that it happened. The sources reviewed do not show that Cruise and DiCaprio are rivals or that either declined a project to avoid working with the other. Startefacts’ July 22, 2023 feature and FandomWire’s July 19, 2023 article relay possible interpretations, not confirmation from the actors or an identified industry source.
What the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood story actually shows
Quentin Tarantino’s casting discussion for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is a concrete example often relevant to this question. Tarantino spoke with Cruise about the film, but the eventual central pairing was DiCaprio and Brad Pitt. The account of the casting describes the search for the right combination, actor availability, and character fit; it does not say Cruise and DiCaprio were competing for the same role.

In a 2019 report, /Film (Slashfilm) quoted Tarantino describing his interaction with Cruise: “He’s a great guy and we really hit it off. [A collaboration] could happen on something else.” This is Tarantino’s assessment of Cruise and the possibility of working with him, not an explanation for why Cruise and DiCaprio have not appeared together.
What can be concluded about their careers?
The Guardian’s 2010 profile compared the actors’ career images and trajectories, but did not establish a feud or explain the absence of a shared film. The contrast between their paths may invite speculation, but it does not prove that one actor blocked, avoided, or competed with the other.
