Meena Arora Nayak’s The Panchatantra of Vishnusharma is presented in a Scroll.in excerpt as a fresh retelling containing 69 stories. The excerpt, published April 12, 2023, begins with three fish facing the same danger—and choosing very different responses.
What is the 69-story retelling?
The headline refers to a Scroll.in book-excerpt article published on April 12, 2023. It introduces an excerpt from The Panchatantra of Vishnusharma by Meena Arora Nayak, with the excerpt attributed to Aleph Book Company. The figure of 69 is the number of stories stated in Scroll’s headline; the excerpt itself does not independently document a full-book count. Read the Scroll.in excerpt.
This is an excerpt, not a review of the complete book or a study of the wider Panchatantra tradition. It offers a glimpse of the retelling through a framed tale about risk, judgment, and the limits of individual effort.
How do the three fish respond to danger?
In the excerpt’s first episode, three fish hear fishermen say they plan to return to the lake. Their names signal contrasting approaches to uncertainty:

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Anagatvidhata is associated with forethought. He urges the others to leave before the danger arrives.
- Pratyutpannamati is described as one who thinks on his feet. He agrees to leave.
- Yadabhavishya is glossed as “whatever happens, happens.” He stays, relying on fate.
The fish who leave survive; the fish who remain are caught the next morning. The episode sets preparation and adaptation against passive acceptance. It does not make the two active fish identical: one acts before the threat is immediate, while the other joins the plan when the danger is clear.
What does the bird couple add to the lesson?
The frame story then shifts to a bird couple. The male bird boasts that he can empty the ocean with his beak. His wife challenges the scale of that undertaking and recommends seeking help.

That exchange complicates a simple message about boldness. Confidence may prompt action, but the story also asks whether the proposed effort matches the size of the problem—and whether cooperation is wiser than relying on one creature’s resolve. These are themes visible in this excerpt; they should not be treated as a summary of every story in Nayak’s book.
