Their return to collectors began not with a wreck dive, but with urban explorers’ photographs of the abandoned vessel in 2009—and a later recovery effort led by arcade collector Oliver Moazzezi.
What was the Duke of Lancaster?
The Duke of Lancaster began as a passenger vessel and later became a leisure attraction called The Fun Ship. Its voyages ended in 1983, according to Indian Defence Review’s February 19, 2025 account. Plans to turn the grounded ship into a hotel and tourist attraction did not proceed.
Though some coverage calls it a “shipwreck,” the reported story is not about a vessel lost in a maritime disaster. The ship was grounded on the Welsh coast and left unused after its leisure-attraction plans ended.
How did collectors learn the arcade was aboard?
Urban explorers photographed the arcade inside the ship in 2009. That was the reported rediscovery: the images brought the machines to collectors’ attention, rather than a new discovery of a wreck. A 2016 Kotaku report, relaying arcade collector Tony Temple’s account, describes collector Oliver Moazzezi later tracking down the owner and helping pursue the machines’ recovery.

What games were recovered?
The reports describe roughly 50 cabinets, but do not provide an original inventory. Indian Defence Review identifies Space Invaders and Galaxian among the games. Kotaku says more than 50 classic cabinets were recovered and describes them as dating from around 1980–81 or earlier. These are reported estimates, not a verified count or complete list.
What condition were the machines in?
Accounts say water leaking into the ship and vandalism damaged some cabinets. Collectors undertook repairs or restoration after the machines were removed. The reports do not establish that every cabinet survived, that all were restored to working order, or where each machine ended up.
