But the title’s wording needs an important correction: Plasencia did not supply the ketamine that caused Perry’s death, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The fatal supply came later through a different chain.
Why did the doctor call Matthew Perry a “moron”?
Salvador Plasencia sent the message to Mark Chavez, another physician involved in the case. In the account of the plea agreement and sentencing memorandum reproduced by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Plasencia wrote: “I wonder how much this moron will pay,” followed by “let’s find out.” The messages were about Perry and the prospect of charging him for ketamine; they were not a court’s description of Perry or words Perry used about himself. The Justice Department’s sentencing announcement quotes the messages.
Was Plasencia prescribing ketamine to Perry?
In the criminal conduct for which he was convicted, Plasencia was distributing and selling ketamine—not providing ordinary, legitimate therapeutic treatment. The Justice Department says he distributed the drug outside the usual course of professional practice and without a legitimate medical purpose.
On September 30, 2023, after being introduced to Perry by a patient who said Perry wanted ketamine and would pay substantial cash, Plasencia contacted Chavez, obtained ketamine and related items, and went to Perry’s home. He injected Perry and left ketamine with Perry’s personal assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa. From September 30 through October 12, Plasencia distributed 20 vials, multiple tablets and syringes to Perry and Iwamasa. Prosecutors said he charged $57,000 for these efforts and cited about $15 per vial as the going price in this case; those figures are not a general ketamine price survey.

During one treatment at the home, Perry’s blood pressure spiked and he froze up. The Justice Department says Plasencia nevertheless left additional vials with Iwamasa, knowing the assistant would inject Perry. These details come from the government’s sentencing account, not from a finding that Plasencia supplied the fatal dose.
Did Plasencia supply the ketamine that killed Perry?
No. The U.S. Attorney’s Office stated in its December 3, 2025 sentencing announcement: “Plasencia did not provide the ketamine that caused his death.” The distinction separates Plasencia’s earlier distribution conduct, which resulted in his guilty plea and sentence, from the later supply used in Perry’s final days.

| Supply chain | Timing and role | What the record establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Plasencia and Chavez | September 30–October 12, 2023 | Plasencia distributed ketamine and related items to Perry and Iwamasa. Plasencia pleaded guilty to distribution counts; DOJ says his supply was not the fatal ketamine. DOJ sentencing announcement |
| Erik Fleming and Jasveen Sangha | Later supply; AP reports that on October 28, Iwamasa gave Perry multiple injections using ketamine from Sangha | AP’s updated timeline traces the fatal supply through Fleming to Sangha, distinct from Plasencia’s earlier distribution. Associated Press timeline |
The Los Angeles County medical examiner’s finding, as reported by the Associated Press, identified acute effects of ketamine as the primary cause of death and drowning as a secondary cause. That finding does not make Plasencia the source of the fatal ketamine; DOJ’s sentencing account explicitly distinguishes his supply from it.
What sentence did Plasencia receive?
Plasencia pleaded guilty on July 23, 2025, to four counts of distributing ketamine. On December 3, 2025, he was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison, fined $5,600 and immediately remanded to custody. He surrendered his California medical license in September 2025. These outcomes are reported in the Justice Department’s sentencing release.

How should the broader criminal case be understood?
The Justice Department’s August 2024 charging announcement named five defendants and described alleged roles in the supply chain. At that charging stage, the government emphasized that an indictment is an allegation and that defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Those allegations should not be treated as final findings about every defendant. For Plasencia, the later guilty plea and sentence establish his own distribution conviction; DOJ specifically says his ketamine was not the supply that caused Perry’s death. The 2024 charging announcement and the AP timeline updated through May 2026 provide the broader chronology.
